Opengardensniagara Blog

Open Gardens Niagara is a blog that explores everything about Niagara, its gardens whether residential, botanical, commercial or farming.  Niagara is home to the tender fruit belt where peaches, apricots, cherries and other tender fruit are grown.

It is known as a wine region, and Grimsby is close to many of our top wineries. Tawse was named Winery of the Year for 2014 by Wine Access Magazine.  Trius Winery at Hellebrand received the Lieutenant Governor's Award for Excellence in Ontario Wines 2014.    It was Inniskillin's 1989 ice wine that won Gold Grand Prix d'Honneur Show that brought Canadian wine to world attention.

Grimsby is the gateway to Niagara, and is an historic town that boasts a significant role in the War of 1812.  Its Painted Ladies in Grimsby Beach are houses dating from the Chautauqua Era in the 1800's.  A group of Methodists started these communities as a combination of religious, social and intellectual gatherings.  Tents were turned to board-and-batten cottages that today the pretty houses are painted in enchanting colours.

Don't forget Niagara includes the mighty Niagara Falls and the prettiest town in Canada Niagara-on-the-Lake.
