What kinds of competitions are out there for young engineers and designers? I wonder this as I remember my brother, Brian's activities in the Science Fair Competition each year. There still is a Canada-wide science fair. And there are even bigger competitions now.
"The Hackaday Prize is a worldwide hardware design challenge focused on globally impactful innovation." This annual contest, started in 2014 for makers has so far given out $1, 000, 000 in prize money, and helped hardware hackers turn ideas into viable products.
There are quite a few prizes at the $10,000 level. The top prize has ranged from $50,000 to $200,000 plus Supplyframe DesignLab Residency. The entry period started May 19th and closes August 31st. The top one hundred entries go to the finals, and the winners will be announced around November 6th 2020.
;The first competition was in 2014. The winner was SatNOGS, the low-cost modular open-source technology stack that facilitates monitoring of satellite transmitted data, with the grand prize of almost $200,000. Alternately the prize was a trip into space, once that was feasible.
The next year, 2015, the grand prize went to Eyedriveomatic - the gaze-controlled wheelchair. This invention has turned into a foundation, to get the technology out to as many people as possible. In 2016 it went to Dtto, a modular robot built with 3D printed parts, servo motors, magnets, and readily available electronics.
These are such creative and amazing inventions. There are so many of them - hundreds of entries each year. It makes me think there are a lot of engineers out there.
The optimist says: “The glass is half full.” The pessimist says: “The glass is half empty.” The engineer says: “The glass is twice as big as it needs to be.”
Today's designs were inspired with all those George Clooney polka dot pictures. You can see the products available on Redbubble, and the original image created to source the dots from.
