It seems like Social Media has a reputation for its negative impacts on our human mental health and behaviour. What has changed in human behaviour? Here's what is most often cited:
Cyberbullying and online harassment - this shows up as the number one concern.
Constantly engaging in social comparison, we're filled with negative emotions: envy, shame, anxiety, or conceit
Frequently exposed to negative content...eroding our sense of goodness and shared humanity
Algorithms tell us what we want to believe, we become polarized...shared understanding across society breaks down.
Research studies abound. This study has a coloured pie chart. It seems to tell me that the impacts are more positive than negative in people's own opinions. The researchers conclude that there exists a "positive affliction" in social media. That's a great expression "positive affliction".
Most studies now conclude that social media usage leads to addictive effects. We understand the problems associated with addiction, so this is a big impact.
Are there benefits? Maybe there's a large addition to the jokes archives on endless scrolling humour. Do you think it can outnumber Dad Jokes?
What do you think of this landscape? It is a boat bottom in Port Dalhousie. I extended the hillside and added some more "trees". I thought the colours and horizontal design were perfect.
