Marilyn's Photos - Nov 28 2025 - Black Friday Rush
Black Friday started off as a factory worker call-in sick day after Thanksgiving Thursday. Supposedly from food poisoning. When I heard someone earlier this week describe their recipe for baked sweet potato marshmallows, I would call in sick after that, too. That’s a dish that could only be invented in the U.S.
What is special this year? The annual family favourite book - Guinness World Records - is the cheapest it has ever been for Black Friday. What about a real ale advent calendar with 12 craft beers inside. And these are deals you will see in the Scotsman, so are from Britain. Who could have guessed that Black Friday would take the world.
Inject a sense of urgency - offer a gift with purchase
Attract shoppers with an in-store event - raffle some products for charity, a live marketing event, someone doing something to become a Guinness World Record. The article is promoting this second idea. “Guinness World Records experiential events are specifically designed to attract and entertain a passing audience, perfect for family-friendly engagement.”
And here’s an example: Guinness brings holiday magic to Montreal with its “World of Guinness” pop-up. Oops. This is Guinness beer. It is a pull-your-own-pint event. The Guinness Beer brand was established in 1759. The World Guinness Records started only 60 years ago. No contest: Guinness Beer wins at pop-up events. Well, and it is beer.
Seeing as Canadian Thanksgiving is long-gone, one could go for a sweet potato marshmallow casserole for Christmas. It takes brown sugar as well as the package of miniature marshmallows, so not sure if this might be a main course or dessert course dish. I expect if we put a pie crust underneath, it can move on to the dessert table.
