Who Could Love a Pig Lily?

Wake Up on the Bright Side

How does a plant get its common name?  Calla Lily has a few common names.  They include Pig Lily, White Arum, Trumpet Lily, Florist's Calla, Garden Calla and Arum Lily.  One site tells me that the word Calla comes from the Greek term for beautiful.  The Merriam Webster dictionary site says that the origin of Calla Lily is new latin, genus name, modification of Greek kallaia rooster's wattles.

Two well-known artists made Calla Lilies a frequent subject of their work:  Georgia O'Keeffe painted Calla Lilies many times with swirling, flowing lines.  Robert Maplethorpe photographed them in black and white with light shining through the flowers.

Cannas - Beautiful Lines

Canna leaves are elegant and colourful, with flowing lines as they unfold.  They have been popular with artists for a long time.  Georgia O'Keeffe 's image of Canna Leaves is on display in the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe.

With hybridization, the leaves have taken on rainbow hues.  Together with the orchid-like flowers, it remains a popular pot plant and garden display plant.

Santa Fe Architecture

When we visited Santa Fe in September, it was in the middle of the summer festival. There was the festival of drinking (yes, drinking), then the festival of the pet parade and the royal family parade, and then the festival of the historical and hysterical, and more festivals to follow with parades and horses.

What I like most, though, is the lovely architecture. Here are a few shots of the adobe buildings and adobe colours everywhere.
