Google Feels Lucky

How does Google decide those little doodles at the top?  I clicked on "I'm Feeling Lucky" and see a page of doodles for July.  Continue scrolling and one can likely scroll down to the beginning of doodles.  That was in August 1998, designed by Google's founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin.  The first doodle was about the Burning Man Festival!

"The first Google Doodle was featured in August 1998. and it was designed by Google’s founders; Larry Page and Sergey Brin. It was a doodle which notified the users of a Burning Man Festival, which Page and Brin attended, so if the servers crashed, you would know why Google was offline. Later on, Google Doodles became more than random logos; they became a part of Google’s culture."

  • Sergey Brin and Larry Page, the cofounders of Google, went to Burning Man with Eric Schmidt nearly two decades ago to see if he had what it takes to become CEO.
  • Schmidt landed the job because he proved he could cut loose.
Schmidt had been to Burning Man Festivals prior to the job, and that attracted Brin's and Page's attention.  Schmidt subsequently became an executive fixture at Google/Alphabet from 2001 to 2017.
