What I "took away" yesterday was that there might be fun asking AI questions. I have a lot of garden questions. Let's check out a few.
AI ChatGPT is excellent on these sorts of answers - what adjectives would we use to describe them? Let's head over to the synonym dictionary - how about fawning, unctuous, smarmy and insincere, slimy, even ingratiating. I like unctuous, as well.
At least ChatGPT didn't recommend I put glue in my cheese to make it stick to the pizza better. That's one of its answers so far.
So I thought I'd conclude with this question and find out its reply.
Does this have a sense of Oscar Wilde to you? Witty and mocking.
It is peony season just starting - the tree peonies are blooming. They last for a day or two and we've had cooler weather so they might bloom a bit longer. These are the regular herbaceous peonies that go to bouquets for florists.
The CBC interviewed a doctor who cautioned about using AI for "self-diagnosis." The study had given medical exam multiple choice questions to AI, and it failed some simple ones. There are many articles on the comparison of AI chatbot and human medical diagnosis. It seems like a game of chess - sometimes AI wins, sometimes the doctors. I wonder which side is keeping score. Are we keeping score?
At the other end of things AI being used for writing is even more popular. It shouldn't be as hard. However, take the popular example that people are writing about. An AI chatbot writing the email to dump a friend. Like medical diagnosis, the success levels are similar. Some successes and other failures with there being too many signs of a bot at work.
You can put text into an AI detector and get a probability rating that it is AI-created. Some of these "expose" articles have done this to find out they weren't from the 'author."
I have started to check garden images on Fine Art America. Last week, I was surprised when I put some images through HIVE AI detection. Gardens with little angels carrying daisy bouquets seem sufficiently saccharine as to be AI generated. And there are lots of AI-generated images of this sort. What did I find? 0% AI. This work is entirely original and the artist is "renowned". Perhaps the originator for all the copies I see. Here we are in the some successes and some failures at figuring things out.
Pinterest, though, seems to be a magnet for AI-. The AI-generated garden, flower, plant, etc images. In my tests, I've found that more than 50% of the garden-related images are deemed AI-generated. So many gardens, plants and flowers with that "saccharine" quality. In flowers and plants there is too much symmetry, sunlight, and unusual colours. Too many blossoms on one plant, and so on.
Here's a great example - a hosta with the wrong flowers and strange-coloured leaves. 99% probability AI-generated. A "log-garden" that is 99% probability AI-generated.
Should we be taking stock every so often to see the progress? Or will one day it happen and "in a bound Biggles was freed." And we all are in an AI-generated world.
What do you think of this field of rapeseed and clover? I saw a few of these along Fourth Avenue on Saturday. This was at Fourth And Jordan Road.

Sometimes there's a sizeable rabbit hole when it comes to finding out about things. Like Alice, you look down and see a lot of interesting things. Yesterday's investigation of polka dots brought up tattoo dots. Can this extract from the google search be fact?
Three Dots:
"Mi Vida Loca" or "My Crazy Life": This is a traditional meaning, often associated with gang culture, and represents resilience and perseverance despite challenging circumstances.
(In a) Vertical Line: Can represent death, life, and reincarnation.
(In a) Horizontal Line (Ellipsis): Represents the past, present, and future.
(as) Holy Trinity: Some individuals choose three dots to represent the Christian concept of the Holy Trinity.
Other Meanings: In some cultures, three dots are used to ward off evil spirits or provide pain relief.
Five Dots:
Prison Tattoo: Four dots representing prison walls and the fifth dot within representing the prisoner.
Other Meanings: Five dots can also symbolize various other things, such as fertility, sayings on how to treat women or police, or a way for gang members to identify with each other.
Single Dots:
Gang Symbol: A single dot on the cheek can signify that the wearer is a pimp.
Other Meanings: A single dot can also have other, less common meanings, such as representing a group of close friends or standing alone in the world.
I don't know anything about dot languages. We know about Morse codes it was prevalent in the 20th century, but we didn't learn anything other than SOS. There was more interest in flag language - which I learned n Girl Guides.
There's a coding language with dots - AsciiDots. And what about Braille? It is a language of raised dots. Aren't dice a language of numbers using dots? I find those little dots are named "pips."
I now know as much about tattoos as I know about Morse Code. But the cry for help - get me out of here - is definitely more sincere about tattoos.!
Polka dot designs have been with us for a long time. Since medieval times. But I think before that - in indigenous cultures where tattooing was prevalent and dots formed patterns. But they weren't the patterns that polka dots have come to mean. More on that to come.
So medieval times? Dots meant rashes like leprosy syphilis, smallpox, bubonic plague and measles. It was after the mid 1700s that polka dots came into their own with the sewing machine, and perfectly round and evenly spaced dots because of mechanized weaving. And dancing the polka.
The polka dot pattern is said to bring wealth and prosperity in the Philippines. The round shapes symbolize money and fortune. Dresses, shirts, pants, shoes or any accessories with polk dot patterns are part of New year's celebrations and blessings.
And there's a theory that when celebrities are pregnant they often turn up in polka dots. The Hindustan Times says that "the most viral example of the same was Anushka Sharma who announced her pregnancy in 2020 wearing a polka dotted dress. Kareena Kapoor had also opted for a polka dotted dress as part of her maternity wardrobe."
Yes, it tends to be a feminine pattern. Men can have polka dot ties and socks, maybe a festive shirt. But forget the rest. George Clooney in the polka dot suit leaning against the polka dot car was outrageous and fun. That was 2013 with the artist Kusama creating the dot style for all the photos.
Part of the fun is that there was sa tradition of American actresses and celebrities who wore polka dots - Lucille Ball, Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren and Audrey Hepburn. Even the sophisticated Grace Kelly is seen in polka dots.
But the rest of us - we aren't so adventurous. Polka dots are considered the realm of children's clothing, bathing suits, and similar attire.
There is a heads-up on a rebel theme. Since the 1980s the polka dot appears in gay culture and representing subversion and rebellion. Supposedly unconventional colour choices, textures and styling do it.
So polka dots in our times are in recession. In fact, most prints are in recession. They have gone into the unconscious past. It is consistent with our colour journey which has receded into dark hue - blacks, greys, blues.
Maybe if we started doing the polka dance again, the collective conscious polka dot memory would come back.
The headline says Canada Residents Born 1945 to 1985 could be eligible for this - you have to click to find out "this." But the disgruntled older person in the picture gets your attention.
Was this person born in 1945? If I sat next to hear at the table would you ask if we were sisters? THat's interesting isn't it?
So I went about the internet doing some asking. The first site says 79, the second 36, the third 88, and the fourth says 79. These are all sponsored sites selling other things. What about sites that are interested in discerning age. The last one says 82 years old.
If we go to Perfectcorp.com we will find the YouCan Makeup: AI Selfie editor will give us all kinds of advice - it is a virtual makeup ap, free AI hairstyle and hair colour changes, clothes changer and avatar generator, a one-tap photo face shaper, and AI skin and photo retouch. And how old does this lady look - older than my mother when she passed away at 93. It could be how grumpy she looks. And I start to look carefully at the image and can see a 40kpm sign in the background, so think this is a Toronto street scene. But even though I put the image into ClarityCheck, I don't want to give my email for the report so maybe I'll have to figure out this age-looking thing some other day.
Should I look at those apps that predict a person's age progression? At the Perfect app, it shows a person's age progressions - 16, 24, 35, and so on. Can you imagine young people at 16 looking at themselves and what they will look like at 45? It seems a bit scary to me.
Here's the example, with the postings to instagram, X and TikTok.
Historically, this technology started out as a method to identify and apprehend fugitives and locate missing children. We do get to odd places from where we started.
