I've been out photographing gardens since early morning today, so I am late with the post today. It is the Trillium competition for the prettiest front gardens in Grimsby. This is a contest that originated in St. Catharines in the 1980's and spread across the province to garden clubs/societies in towns and cities. The competition looks at the maintenance of materials and the design of the garden. Hamilton's contest typically rewards very neat gardens of interesting design and a wide variety of plant materials - trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals.
So the first picture is the garden of a naturalist and conservationist who lives in Grimsby. It is highly unusual in this sort of contest. It represents a stream in nature - with native plants and trees. It has relaxed neatness when you compare with the second picture.
Our second picture shows typical large recently-built house, with the huge driveway and the ornamental bed centre island. Of course, the gates in front to indicate both grandeur and security.
The third picture shows a heritage house - this time with a modern garden design and layout that one might expect to see in front of a modern flat-roofed house.
So which 60 or so gardens will be the prettiest gardens in Grimsby? We'll know in a week.
