July 1st 2020 - Stand Up for Canadian Weather!

What I like about the photo of the day is writing the date every day.  Today we're half way through the year.  Perfect for a country to celebrate itself.

I am expecting beautiful weather today with lots of sun.  It is fitting to celebrate Canada's weather on its birthday.  We are known for 'weather'.   And in particular, it is the extremes that we are good at. The highest temperature recorded is 45.0 degrees C in Saskatchewan, and the lowest is -63.0 degrees C in Snag, Yukon.  Did you know that Thorold is ranked as number 1 in Ontario for lowest number of days with rain or snow and lowest number of days above 20C?

The weather channel wants to let us know that July 1st has featured terrible weather in the past.  The first-ever recorded tornado went through Fonthill and Port Robinson nearby in Niagara.  That was in 1792, but it wasn't on July 1st - it was June 30th. It was called Hurricane Lane. It cut a path of east west destruction, which became Hurricane Road.  It's on the map.

On July 1, 1903, it rained fish on the Prairies - The Weather Channel says they were likely scooped up from a pond or river and deposited back on land during the thunderstorm.

And not so long ago, in 2001, it was a snow day in northern and central Ontario and Quebec.  Kapuskasing got 3 cm of snow.  Ottawa cancelled its July 1st fireworks.  This year you can see Justin Trudeau's Canada Day Greetings HERE

July daisies and our maple leaf flag feature as our images of the day.
