One of the enjoyments of having a database of thousands of photos is finding something you'd forgotten about. The old military bunker along the Pacific Highway 1 popped out at me on the weekend. It needed a Sky from Skylum - that could turn this into a compelling image. Not just any sky, I wanted a cosmic one. So here it is below.
Why do I think it needs something so evocative. It stands strangely on the coastline, perched precariously on the slope's edge. Why is it there?
It is known as the Little Devil's Slide bunkers being located at Devil's Slide. It acquired its peculiar appearance after a Montara man (never identified in the many articles) bought the land from the military in 1983 and dug away much of the bluff. Then he abandoned the property. And so it remains today.
Everyone has become familiar with the odd-looking structure and its role in the region’s military history of WWII.
That's because there are all kinds of articles and advise to check it out: "Hop on Highway 1 South. Just south of Pacifica there is a tunnel. Once you go through the tunnel, the bunker parking lot is immediately to your right. Keep your eyes peeled as the dense fog can make it hard to spot the bunker. On clear days, it is unmissable. Once you go through the tunnel you know you have arrived. The walk up to the bunker is about 500 ft from the parking lot. There is plenty of room to walk about. NOTE: Be careful around the edges of the cliffs, they are unstable."
The pictures show so much graffiti inside and out that it looks wounded. It is a wreck, a derelict, and an outrageous ruin. It is the California-style folly on the hill created by a fool.
The Wikipedia entry for Devil's Slide is HERE. A US Government mile by mile guide to the section of coast is HERE.
