So the little girl who thought cottage cheese was mage in cottages was correct. The name comes from the fact that it was made in country homes where milk was easier to get. "Cottage" is thought to have meant a small country residence.
There are dozens of misconceptions categorized by scientific area. I like the Atmosphere misconceptions.
Rain comes from holes in clouds.
Rain occurs when clouds are shaken.
Empty clouds are filled by the sea.
Clouds are made of cotton, wool, or smoke.
Gas makes things lighter.
One degree of temperature is smaller on the Celsius scale than on the Fahrenheit scale.
And I found a few more examples of children saying the darnedest things:
Our two young children were swinging and teeter-tottering on the playground near our farm when a small whirlwind blew up. “We’d better get home,” our son told his sister. “I think there’s a tomato coming.”
After planting our vegetable garden all morning, our daughter and I sat down to a lunch of hamburgers. She ate quietly for a while and then started picking the sesame seeds off her bun. “Mom,” she asked seriously, “if we plant these seeds, will they grow hamburgers?”
After a spring thaw, my 3-year-old granddaughter insisted we go for a walk. When we got to the pond, she pointed and said excitedly, “Look grandma—the water’s back!”
My son came home from kindergarten one day with some exciting news to tell me. “We learned something really amazing today,” he gasped. “Before a caterpillar can turn into a butterfly, he has to spin himself into a raccoon.”
I liked the way this fellow was "waiting" on the platform for something. I am hoping it is Spring and that the snow drops will be appearing out of the snow when it recedes over the next few days.
