Mr. Potato Head was first manufactured in 1952, having been invented by George Lerner. in 1949. I had a Mr. Potato Kit where I could choose ears, nose, glasses and so on and push the parts into a potato. It evolved to having a plastic potato body with the toy set in 1964. Mrs. Potato Head came along, and they got a car and boat trailer.
Don Rickles played Mr. Potato Head in the Toy Story movies. Don Rickles entry in Wikipedia mentions all his other movies and his hilarious appearance on countless television shows. He was a great performer for variety shows and late night television with Johnny Carson. Isn't it ironic that a vegetable - Mr. Potato Head- got portrayed by an "insult comedian." His grandchildren were very impressed with this achievement.
Don Rickles was noted for his life-long friendships and his kind personality off-stage. One of the highlight stories is this:
"Rickles befriended mobster "Crazy" Joe Gallo following a performance at the Copacabana in 1972. Gallo, whom Rickles had ribbed mercilessly during his set, despite being warned not to do so, accepted Rickles' ribbings in good humor and invited him to Umberto's Clam House after the show. Rickles declined the offer. That night, a gunfight erupted at Umberto's, killing Gallo."
