June 30 2022 - Gone Fishing

Gone Fishing' - there's a song that Bing Crosby and Louis Armstrong sing.  It is from 1951.  It is a slow meandering sort of song with lyrics to match.  Normally gone fishing means someone is not aware of what is happening around them.   It could be daydreaming or simply ignorant of things.    Into the 20th century, the term came to be used to describe someone who has taken an opportunity to get away from the rigours of daily life. This expression first found footing in America in the 20th century and is taken from the signs commonly placed on local store windows indicating that the shopkeepers weren't around to do business.

"Back in the days when local shops could be run by just one person, it was common for the owner and proprietor of such a business to take a day off to go to the local fishing hole. In those instances, the owner would place a sign on the door to say that he'd gone, indicating that the shop was closed. That is the likely origin of the phrase, which gained traction in America thanks to some popular songs that contained the phrase."

I expect that's how people would like July to turn out for them.  An idyllic retreat.  Tuned out of the bustle around them, and relaxing in the sun and shade.

Our picture today presents that idyllic retreat.  The Muskoka chairs facing the west, awaiting the sunset.
