Burning crosses being carried throughout the town and flaming tar barrel races along Cliffe High Street. Large wooden effigies carried through the town by a group of men before being burned at the bonfires. That could describe Guy Fawkes Day today or the reaction of 3,500 former Twitter employees - half of the Twitter workforce. They are spread all over the world, so they won't be gathering for a protest.
The tradition of Guy Fawkes who in 1605 attempted to blow up the London Houses of Parliament. Following the thwarted plot, Londoners lit bonfires in celebration.
We don't get fireworks displays as much anymore. They are considered dangerous, with the risk of fires. So our festivals tend to be pumpkins and mazes this time of year.
Here's the only Guy Fawkes Event that I found - it is in Orangeville but their FB page has a story of difficulty:
A number of people have reached out to us this year regarding the event. Guy Fawkes Night here in Ontario has faced its share of challenges over the years. First and foremost is the Venue. Not too many places are agreeable to hosting an event that includes a bonfire, fireworks, and alcohol sales! Venue costs and insurance have continued to rise over the years and it has become a real struggle to make it all work...
Alas no Guy Fawkes Festival appears to be happening in Ontario this year.
Our fire display happens at Floyd Elzinga's evening open houses. Pinecones on fire! |
