This has been in the news over the last few weeks - Joe Biden has vowed to get control of this.
It is charges and fees by corporations and retailers. Niagara Falls has a cornucopia of them. They are typically placed next to provincial sales tax, or the city's Municipal Accommodation Tax. That makes it look like a government tax.
A CBC reporter found one at Milestones restaurant. It is a six percent 'luxury fee' at the Fallsview location - a charge that doesn't exist at any other location. The Skyline Tower charges three percent - it is an APF - Attractions and Promotions Fee. The Radisson Hotel calls it an environmental fee, The Days Inn calls it a Daily Mandatory Tax, The Niagara Falls TGI Fridays called it the Niagara Falls Destination Fee. Even the IHOP has the NFDF.
Biden calls them "Junk Fees". He has vowed to crack down on them. He's looking at the airlines where consumers pay $39 billion each year in excessive charges. Where are they being targeted? concert, sporting events, and entertainment ticket fees, airline fees, termination fees for TV, phone and internet, and surprise resort and destination fees. Don't forget credit card non-sufficient funds and late fees.
