June 23 2023 - Titanic x 2

The Titanic has been a compelling story for decades.

"From the outset, the Titanic captured the public's imagination. At the time, it was one of the largest and most opulent ships in the world. It was also considered unsinkable, due to a series of compartment doors that could be closed if the bow was breached."

"However, four days into its maiden voyage in 1912, the Titanic struck an iceberg, and less than three hours later it sank. The drama of the eyewitness accounts and the great loss of life helped make it one of the most well-known tragedies in modern history. After the 1985 discovery of its wreckage, interest in the Titanic only increased, and its enduring appeal was evident with the huge success of James Cameron’s 1997 film about the doomed ocean liner."

And there we have it.   While just over 1,500 people died, this seems to be one of the great 20th century tragedies.  Is it the depths of the ocean that make the tourist submersible eye-popping?  Don't you wonder about a tourist experience where you descend to the bottom of the ocean for 3 hours?  And in a small possibly claustrophobic space?

Did it get to the bottom  It disappeared only one hour and 45 minutes into its voyage.  Specifics about the oxygen supply and how long it would last made the race for time paramount.

And the after story?  "In 2018, David Lochridge, an employee at OceanGate, raised safety concerns with management and government regulators.  He claimed a wrongful termination lawsuit.

The passengers on board included co-founder Stockton Rush.  Another passenger was Hamish Harding  - he had journeyed to space on a Blue Origin rocket in June 2022.

That sort of opulent tourism continues the Titanic's compelling story.  We don't expect any submersibles exploring the Titanic depths after this event.  What could be next for the Titanic?

Let's enjoy the ocean from the viewing platform at the Monterey Bay aquarium.
