April 15 2024 - The Ginat RedBall

Bing has a picture of the Antwerp Station today with a bit red ball over the arched entrance.   Click on the picture and you will find the giant red ball has been all over the world.

It isn't a red ball.  It is the RedBall.  Kurt Perschke is the artist.

"As RedBall travels around the world people approach me on the street with excited suggestions about where to put it in their city. In that moment the person is not a spectator but a participant in the act of imagination. I have witnessed it across continents, diverse age spans, cultures, and languages, always issuing an invitation. That invitation to engage, to collectively imagine, is the true essence of the RedBall Project."

Its claim is that it is the world's longest-running street art work.  It has been in over 25 cities globally and moves through a city with a new site each day of the performance.  i think its been going since 2001.  One headline said it got loose in Toledo - it is 15 feet high and 250 pounds.  Sounds like something out of the Prisoner Series - that giant white balloon that popped out of the water in each episode.

I took pictures of the red ball installation in the Brookfield Galleria in 2009.  It wasn't a single giant red ball but a string of them in an arc. That would have been after the 2008 exhibit of the giant red ball.

Here's a picture of it in Old City Hall.

Here is the subsequent red balls suspended in the Galleria. Another variation  by Kurt Perschke.
