June 27 2024 - Squandering

Extravagant, foolish, wasteful, thoughtless spending -  "Squandered a fortune."

Doesn't squander have to result in loss?  Otherwise, wouldn't all those billionaires spending millions and billions on this and that be squanderers?

Would Elon Musk's purchase of Twitter qualify for squandering? Yes say  the headlines - he wasted 44 billion dollars on Twitter.  He joins the select club of celebrity squandering.

With their public personas, it is easy to know which celebrities have spent large sums of money - for example, Michael Jackson was reportedly at least $400 million in debt when he died unexpectedly in 2009.  He seems to come up as the top squanderer.

The headlines about celebrities showcase which stupid things their money went to. Here's an article on the topic.  This article says Johnny Depp wasted it on "nearly everything". Some items are novel - a ghost detector, tiger skin rugs, a Treasure Hunt, and some are expected - expensive mansions and properties.

Do individuals squander differently than governments -  "government squanders taxpayer money" is a regular headline.

Here is a U.K. headline: "Liz Truss racked up a £15,000 bill for food and alcohol on a single flight to Australia when she was foreign secretary." The Organization Best for Britain has calculated that the Tories have wasted $26 billion per year on average since 2019.  The Canadian Taxpayers Association, the Fraser Institute showcase Canadian Government waste. There are lists and lists of the specifics - nothing as novel as ghost detectors.

And "wasting" goes beyond  money.  What about time wasted - there's a long list of time wasters.  Very long. I like this one 'watching bad movies" - vs "watching good movies".
