Aug 14 2024 - Tomato the fruit vs tomato the vegetable

Tomato the fruit vs tomato the vegetable.  That would be a topic for The Debaters on the CBC radio show each week.   This is an area similar to the definition of the seasons.  Meteorological vs astronomical.

So it turns out that tomatoes are considered a vegetable by nutritionists.  What would make them a fruit?

"Botanically, a fruit is a ripened flower ovary and contains seeds. Tomatoes, plums, zucchinis, and melons are all edible fruits, but things like maple “helicopters” and floating dandelion puffs are fruits too."

"Now, nutritionally, the term “fruit” is used to describe sweet and fleshy botanical fruits, and “vegetable” is used to indicate a wide variety of plant parts that are not so high in fructose. In many cultures, vegetables tend to be served as part of the main dish or side, whereas sweet fruits are typically snacks or desserts."

Tomato is considered the healthiest fruit, but not the healthiest vegetable - that is the realm of spinach and kale.

In the scoring system out of 20 - tomatoes score just under carrots and above lemons.  Spinach is at 86 and kale at 49.

Why did the tomato turn red? Because it saw the salad dressing!

There is currently a tomato ketchup shortage in America. If they run out of mayonnaise too, does that make it a double-dip recession?

Why did the tomato go out with a prune? Because he couldn't find a date!

It turns out tomatoes don't make for very good jokes.

And if you want to know what a dandelion fruit looks like, this is a magnification view of a dandelion seed.  Looks like a tiny spiky melon.
