Apr 229 2025 - Relief

Our headlines today are about one thing - the Canadian election.  Every page has news on the polls and the results so far.

The Conservatives conceded defeat last night. The Liberals declared victory. Likely a minority government with 168 seats projected, and 172 needed for a majority government.

Last week the CBC had a bombshell report that Pierre Poilievre was trending to lose his own riding.  The Conservative spokespeople dismissed this idea on interview shows and were quite nasty towards the news media.  One of today's headlines is a striking victory for the CBC - Poilievre is in second place behind the Liberal Party in his own riding.  That's as of 10 minutes ago.  It now says defeated. That must be tense counting in that riding.  Isn't that historic on the part of voters to make such a strong anti-Trump behaviour statement.

So now we wait for the final counting.  This is a boring part for us.  That's the opposite of how the U.S. elections go with the tension and battleground recounting and then the touch and go over certification and all manner of protests.

Did you look at the list of parties?  I went to the Elections Canada website and found out there are a lot of parties I wasn't aware of - Animal Protection Party, the Marijuana Party, a Marxist-Leninist Party, Communist Party - 18 parties listed (including No Affiliation).

A more immediate issue is a big wasp in the office.  Maybe we'll know the election results by the time it calms down and I get it back outside.
