Playing cards versus collector cards. I wonder about this. We played card games when we were children. Imagine that, not just before iPhones, but before television. I might guess that we played similar games to children from a century before us. The difference was that we were allowed to platy and a century before us, children worked full-time in agriculture, the mines, factories and so on.
There is a long history to playing cards and they came from the East to Europe in the late 1300s and 1400s. It was the French who developed the icons for the four suits we know today and made them red and black. I would have thought that Bridge is the most popular game today, but it turns out it is complicated and has declined. The most popular card game? Texas Hold ‘Em - the most well-known version of poker. Of course, there is gambling involved. It is popular in casinos and online. And the next popular is Solitaire - allows you to play alone. Then comes bridge for those who love strategy.
Then there are trading card games - they started in 1993. Pokemon came about in 1996 and is the top-selling trading card game in 2024. There are lots of videos explaining how to get started with Pokemon. Doesn’t it seem interesting that card games are still popular. There are millions of active players of the physical and digital versions of the card game.
It seems some things are timeless and beloved by us humans.
Here’s Hidden Bench with beautiful fall colours. We’re behind this year and the colours are not as bright. We’ll see how things play out.
