Sep 3 2024 - Burning Man Burns

The news after the event has happened.  That's normal these days.  There were no headlines over the weekend for the Burning Man Festival  It was Aug 25 - Sep 2.

Looking at the pictures, it certainly takes up a vast expanse of desert.  In fact what it seems to be is a fantastic photo opportunity.  Great pictures everywhere - and everywhere included more than 70,000 people.  There have been some celebrated artists involved in the sculptures.  The first Burning Man was 8 feet on Baker Beach near San Francisco.  In 2019 it was an astonishing 61 feet high.

The theme this year was Curiouser and Curiouser.  That's a reference to Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.  Can you imagine that this is 38 years old now?

I've made the first mistake.  It is not a festival.  It says that:  "It's a city wherein almost everything that happens is created entirely by its citizens, who are active participants in the experience."

The website is HERE.   It is more interesting to watch one of the video - it looks like a 1960s event! The title is Sparkly Things and Fire at Burning Man 2024.   If you want to see the "burning man" this is the video HERE.   A lot of fireworks - I expect way more than Niagara Falls.  And then of course -the 61 feet or more of burning man burns.

My water images seem to go with the fire theme.

Goggle Every Day

Do you remember the burning man festival?  This is a yearly event in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada.  It is a radical movement based on 10 principles, such as communal effort, civic responsibility, and radicalism - self-reliance, self-expression and inclusion.

What does this have to do with Google?  I though I'd find out about the daily theme.  I guessed it is a great accomplishment in one of the largest companies in the world to have one's theme chosen.  How does it work?

The very first google doodle appeared in honour of the Burning Man Festival of 1998, and was designed by Larry Page and Sergey Brin to notify users of their absence in case the servers crashed.

This has evolved over time into a major activity with a Google Doodler team, and competitions in various countries. The history of the google doodle is available on Wikipedia here.

I am looking forward to the Canada Day google this year with the 150th birthday.  You can see the Canada Day google doodles here.

Last week Queen Street West had a window display that got my camera's attention.

Burning Man Countdown

Somewhere in our minds is the "Countdown to September".  It may be Labour Day, which signals the ending of summer, or the start of school. There are all sorts of apps for counting down to Labour Day, to September 1st, to January 1st, etc.

What about the countdown app that is the Burning Man Countdown.  I checked out their important dates and upcoming events. The 'Burning Man Community' has events centred in Nevada and San Francisco. They are a 'network of people inspired by the values reflected in the Ten Principles and united in the pursuit of a more creative and connected existence in the world."

So my two images today, charred stumps that land on Lake Ontario's shores seem fitting for this theme.  The first image seemed to me to be 'first step' .  Perhaps it is an escapee of the 'burning man community'.
