Mar 23 2023 - Puzzled!

Ubiquitous things to us - a jigsaw puzzle. How do they make them?  You can buy my images on Fine Art America in the form of jigsaw puzzles - 500 pieces or 1000 pieces.  Jigsaw puzzle manufacturing seems straightforward.

  1. First, the artwork is chosen and printed onto paper. The standard process used to print puzzles is lithography.
  2. Next, the printed pictures adhere to chipboard through a lamination process. The puzzles are set aside to dry for several days before going into a die-cutter.
  3. After going through the die-cutter, the puzzle pieces are boxed and ready to ship.

The secret of a 1,000-piece puzzle is that it is usually 38 pieces by 27 pieces for an actual total of 1,026 pieces.

How long does it take to complete a puzzle?  The average times for completing puzzles are as follows: 100-piece puzzles: 2–3 hours. 500-piece puzzles: 4–5 hours. 1,000-piece puzzles: 9–11 hours.

And my picture below - is that an easy vs hard puzzle to complete?  Will lit come with a piece missing, as one person asks is there always a piece missing? This is quite an area of inquiry.  Here's a funny article about it HERE. The original answer from the manufacturer? “We are not allowed to divulge information about our production process”:

"What makes a puzzle impossible? The combination of colour and the unique shape of each piece! This one has it all. The most popular one that you have probably already seen on the Internet, the “Krypt” is a difficult jigsaw puzzle that's been around for quite some time."

"The hardest puzzle is considered to be "Designed by Yuu Asaka, the Ice 9 comprises a small board and nine pieces consisting of an array of right angles and curved edges, many of which fit together in a number of combinations, much like a real life game of Tetris — but getting all nine to fit together on the board is quite the challenge."

There is this well-known hardest puzzle below - ready to start - and then completed.  More about this puzzle Here
