Feb 18 2024 - Stolen Children's Art on Fine Art America

My website points to the Fine Art America page that I have.  Fine Art America is probably the largest website platform for artists.   It is a print-on-demand art platform with all kinds of products available - not just prints on paper, metal and so on, but printing on fabric for t-shirts, mugs, tote bags, towels and jigsaw puzzles and so on.

Today's Globe and Mail is a fraud lawsuit brought against a Quebec school teacher who has posted over a thousand images of his students' work on Fine Art America. The lawsuit is currently for $1.4 million.  The Globe is a little behind - the story has gained international attention and has already made news headlines in Australia, the U.K., and the United States.

I can't imagine the work effort involved - each item has to be uploaded, named, tagged, and so on.

While the artist page and portfolio is gone from Fine Art America, the remnants can be found in google searches.

What great images - a children's collective page would be a wonderful idea.  Too bad he was stealing rather than showcasing all this great talent.  You can see the Fine Art America images interspersed with the News story images.

Koi fish swimming in a circle return us to a more normal realm of images.

Dec 28 2023 -Hopw big is a pillow

This is the start of hibernation.  The headlines include the best pyjama sets, all things cozy, comfy and sleep-inducing.  Here's one - guide to the best body pillows.

"Whether you feel like you’re getting great sleep or not, a body pillow can make a dramatic difference. Don’t believe us? Just take a look at these benefits. They can help with recovery after an injury. They can relieve pressure on your joints. They can help support your spine. They can provide relief from arthritis pain. They can reduce snoring. That’s not even a full list. Plus, they’re just plain comforting."

Casper.com tells us the benefits of the body pillow:

  • Keep everything aligned properly at night
  • Take the pressure off delicate areas of your body
  • Stabilize your head at the right height
  • Can help relieve conditions like sleep apnea
  • Stop your nighttime tossing and turning
  • Aid your blood circulation and blood flow

"And recent studies have also shown that using a body pillow can help you relax better. This extra benefit comes from cuddling with them since hugging releases hormones like oxytocin that lower stress.

Body pillows also provide the benefits you usually get from a great regular pillow, such as proper spinal and neck support, so you don’t pinch anything or wake up with aches and pains."

There are types and fills - the U shaped pillow, the J shaped pillow, the hug body pillow.  Here's an expression I am unfamiliar with - the "loft." It is the height of the pillow - between 5 to 8 inches to accommodate side sleepers.

Casper's article completes with this excellent hibernation sign-off:

Isn't that so pleasant!

Oct 27 2020 - Halloween and the Darkest Night Fun

NASA is going to share an exciting new discovery - it is something about there being more water on the Moon than previously thought, including water in a sunlit region.  The announcement is at noon today.

At the other end of the spectrum, we have this weekend's celebration of the darkness of the haunted corn mazes and farms in Ontario.  They are open after dark for a night full of Halloween terror.  Fonthill boasts the Howell Family Pumpkin Farm.  I found it by accident one year on a drive for fall foliage.  There were hundreds of cars parked along the country road and in the field with people everywhere.  They are open this year - they have removed the live show and the hay play but have kept the corn maze, train ride, and jumping pillow. You will see lots of little children and families at this attraction.

Niagara Falls is lit up for Halloween this year with vivid orange illumination.   Niagara Falls tourism includes a number of Lundy Lane attractions on the scary theme. Even Niagara on the Lake has Ghost Walks and Ghost tours of Fort George.

Our picture is Witch Hazel leaves  on the scanner.  They look like flames of fire.

Simple Shapes

Simple shapes - square, circle, triangle - are with us everywhere. These are the most basic shapes on Earth.

The notable books that explored this were Italian artist Bruno Munari's series which started with The Discovery of the Circle. He writes:
“The first thing a child draws looks like a circle. People spontaneously arrange themselves in a circle when they need to observe something close up, and this led to the origin of the arena, the circus, and the stock exchange trading posts.”

Munari wrote over 60 books and covered the each basic shape in its own book.  For example in Square, he writes: "As tall and as broad as a man with his arms outstretched, the square has always been used, from the oldest writings and rock engravings made by early man, to signify the idea of an enclosure, a house, a village. Enigmatic in its simplicity, in the monotonous repetition of its four sides, its four identical corners, it can generate a whole series of interesting figures".

Kurt Vonnegut's rejected master's thesis was a visual presentation titled "The Shapes of Stories".  The article is HERE. Below is Maya Eilam's version of his thesis:

Koi, The Living Art…Circle of Life

Hi everyone,
It seems to take hundreds of images to get one good one of Koi.  They swim this way and that and get in each other's way.  And then, at one moment, a perfect circle is formed.  So it seems to always be worth the hundreds and hundreds of shots.
