Steam Ahead

We often see model trains, and today it's the Northern Central Railway in New Freedom, PA.  We had a great ride last May on this historic track and railway.  It is the train that took Lincoln to Washington where he gave his Gettysburg Address.

It is a short trip through countryside as it likely was in Lincoln's time. Today it is a leisurely ride.  During the American Civil War, 30 strains would stop daily carrying troops and supplies heading to Washington, or carrying wounded soldiers to hospitals in York and Baltimore.

The North Central carried Lincoln's funeral train through New Freedom and Hanover Junction seventeen months after the Gettysburg Address.

Steaming into History

We steamed into history on the weekend, and were on the William H. Simpson #17 replica locomotive.  It carried Abraham Lincoln to deliver his Gettysburg Address, and also carried his funeral train two years later.

We travelled between New Freedom and Hanover, PA. The station in New Freedom had as many as 30 trains stop daily.  The Northern Central carried troops and supplies to Washington, and after the war, wounded soldiers were transported to hospitals in York and Baltimore.
