Oct 23 2023 - Corn Mazes

We have family farms in Niagara that feature corn mazes.  The big one is Howells Family Pumpkin Farm.  They have a Fall Festival and it is so full of activities that the place is absolutely crowded all through September and October.

"Your Fall Festival ticket will include access to Animal Farm, Goatwalk, Scarecrow Displays, Digger boxes, Tractor Tire Play Area, Singing Chicken Show, Skeleton Band, Chickens to Market Truck Show, Skeleton Truck Show, Singing Frog Show, Scenic Wagon Ride, Haunted Spook Barn, Super Corny Cobbs Maze Adventure, Haystack Jumping Pillow, Bucking Cow Train, and Train-o-sarus Rex Ride."

Hedge mazes have been around for a long time - particularly in England and Europe.  The first corn maze was created in 1993 in Pennsylvania.  There are several ways that mazes are made.  The first is with GPS-enabled tractors to cut paths out of the grown corn.  the second is planted the corn by GPS.

Can you imagine learning the maze routes if you are staff at the attractions?  What happens when someone gets lost in a maze? It seems likely.  There are mazes so large one has a golf course inside the maze.  The biggest is 60 acres in size.  People have called 911 to get help finding the exit.

The end of October is just a week away and we'll be exiting the Autumn Festival of pumpkins, Halloween and corn mazes and entering the Winter Festival that leads up to Christmas.

Grimsby boasts its own labyrinth at Trinity Unity Church.  No worries about calling 911 to exit this one.
