May 12 2024 - Which countries like each other

Which countries like each other?

It is easy to find out who/what is Britain's favourite country?

It is New Zealand.  That seems interesting as there are few British immigrants or citizens  in New Zealand compared to the U.S., Australia and Canada.  Only 3 million British immigrants in New Zealand compared to 109 million in the U.S. 19 million in Australia and 17 million in Canada.

In return who might New Zealand like the most?  They aren't saying or surveying.  It seems there is no favourite country that New Zealand has identified.

Nearby, the favourite countries of the U.S. are Canada and Great Britain.

What country does Canada like the best?  It likes Britain and Japan.

Which country does Japan like the most?  One article says Brazil - It is home to the largest number of expats outside Japan - over 1.6 million.  Another one says Hawaii - as a travel destination.

Around the globe, the most popular destinations for travel seem to be France, Spain and the U.S.   But if you want to move somewhere, it is the U.S., Germany and Saudi Arabia that are the top countries for immigration.

Today's not the day for travel or immigration.  It is Mother's Day.  This would be the day to go out for Brunch or Lunch.

Aug 21 2021 - The Least Religious Countries

Cartoons came to my mind and  I wondered what the most popular cartoon might be.  But I find I am far out of date on this topic. Perhaps I was distracting myself from the events in Afghanistan. I also wonder about religious nations compared to non-religious nations.  Clearly Afghanistan is turning a big corner towards a "religious" nation, a religious rule nation.  My sense is that this is very worrisome for Canadians, so I went looking to find out about our sense of religion and religious rule.

Who would you guess to be the least religious country in the world? The answer is China, but look who is second, Japan.  Here are the numbers in the article covering this topic in worldpopulationreview.com when they asked residents whether they "feel" religious.

  1. China (7% feel religious)
  2. Japan (13% feel religious)
  3. Estonia (16% feel religious)
  4. Sweden (19% feel religious)
  5. Norway (21% feel religious)
  6. Czech Republic (23% feel religious)
  7. Hong Kong (26% feel religious)
  8. Netherlands (26% feel religious)
  9. Israel (30% feel religious)
  10. United Kingdom (30% feel religious)

Can you imagine only 30% of Israelis feel religious.  The article then distinguishes public perception on which country is the least religious.  We Canadians find ourselves in the top 10:

  1. Australia
  2. Sweden
  3. Germany
  4. the Netherlands
  5. New Zealand
  6. Luxembourg
  7. Denmark
  8. Canada
  9. France
  10. Austria
But alas, just as we see some interesting data, the article ends there.  There's no follow-on article or analysis on how this plays out in governments and societies.  There's likely a book coming out soon...

Canada's Birthday is Canada's Anniversary

Here we are on the 149th anniversary/birthday of Canada.  What makes it an anniversary of confederation rather than the marking of the birth of Canada? The Huffington Post calls it Canada's 150th Birthday with a series of articles on the plans and activities here.  The official website is here and calls it the anniversary of Confederation.

Wikipedia is always so instructional and it lists sovereign states by date of formation (date of their independence or of their constitution).  We have such a stable country that we don't think that there are states that have disputed sovereignty or are former sovereign states or have limited recognition.  And there are proposed states as well.  I didn't even realize that there are micronations.  So here's the link for that interesting information.

So enjoy our celebration day -  appreciate the security and freedom that we experience here. Show the red and white colours of our flag.
