Jan 15 2022 - This Simple Hack

How did we get to this place of everything being a "simple hack?"

A life hack is a simple and clever tip or technique for accomplishing some familiar task more easily and efficiently.

Life hacks, "as they are known, are all about eliminating life's manifold frustrations in simple and deliciously clever ways. The best involve tricks that are free, efficient and stunningly obvious in retrospect, deploying household items (like the humble toilet roll) for purposes beyond their wildest aspirations."

And why "hack" instead of "tip".   The Quora answer comes from Andrew, generic all-around expert with 18,400 answers and 19.5 million answer views:

The use of the word "hack" to mean a creative approach to problem solving predates the use of it to imply unauthorized computer access. See A Short History of “Hack” - The New Yorker. But the use of it to mean "tip", as in  Life hacking, is more recent (2004), probably deliberately pulling from the ongoing lexical arguments about "hacker" vs. "cracker" - the tech community still using "hack" to mean creative tinkering as in "I hacked my RC car transmitter to control the toaster", versus the media's use of it to mean "illegal computer access" and thus making the term "sexy".

As we head into 2022 at the half-way point in January, are there important hacks that you need now?

Newsweek's idea of 10 hacks that will make your life easier in 2022 include these: chopping onions, how to skip work without anyone knowing, slicing avocados, clean car headlights, peel potatoes without a peeler... skip ahead to bathing your dog.  It involves peanut butter along the side of the tub.

It is still time to get a calendar - Amazon offers countless life hack day-to-day calendars.  There is probably a box set for every day of the year.

Here's a happy contrast with today's temperature and weather.  This was in Creemore on a garden tour a few years ago.

The Purple Hills

Today we're checking out beautiful gardens in other parts of Southern Ontario.

The weekend weather was noteworthy here in Southern Ontario with lots of rain and cold conditions.  It was reminiscent of August weather in Northern Ontario.  The sky in the Purple Hills around Creemore was a spectacle of swirling clouds that seemed to resemble icy mountains of snow.

While it didn't rain on our garden tour, it did rain when I visited a garden full of Marathon lilies.  There were hundreds to thousands of self-seceded beauties on display.
