Oct 9 2024 - How to lose belly fat

There are so many helpful people.  Belly fat seems to be one of our major complaints.  And how many ways can we count to reduce belly fat?  Bing offers this new breakthrough:  Japanese Insoles that Help You Lose Belly Fat

How many more are there?

AliExpress has the bottles of pills:
Keto Capsules, Ben Fat
Fat Blocker, Reduce Body Fat
Slimming Cream Belly Fat For BURNER Sweat Enhancer Burning Weight Loss

Amazon has an Official Site for belly fat burning

There are at least 15 products on Temu:
Sauna Sweat Lifting Belly Tummy Slimmer Waist, Leg, Arm trainer
Waist Trimmer Tummy Wrap
Order a Size Up Trimmer for Women

Temu always has big-breasted women modelling whatever it is selling.  Look at the difference between the Men's fat burning accessory and the women's version.

I guess these alternatives are more appealing than the health foundation advice.  It looks way more work than pulling two belts tight.

"This bodyweight interval circuit can help reduce a beer gut, and it can also help you prevent getting one in the first place. Do these 8 exercises 30 seconds at a time with 30 seconds of rest in between. That equals 4 minutes of work and 4 minutes of rest. Do 3-5 rounds with a 2-minute rest at the end of each round.

30 seconds of work, 30 seconds of rest:
  • Jog in place
  • Push-ups
  • Jumping jacks
  • Front plank
  • Jog in place
  • Squats
  • Jumping jacks
  • Walking lunges"
This is what gym class is like.  This explains why I go to the Y.   I would never do these exercises voluntarily on my own.  When Branden tells us to do theme, it seems fun.  I guess Branden is worth the admission.

Take a look at these pictures.  Below are three images.  The first was taken at Toronto Botanical Gardens.  The first is the original.  The next two are expanded views created through Photoshop's AI generation.  It is now part of the crop tool.  You expand the canvas and it fills in the scene with three alternatives to choose from.

What do you think?

Mar 7 2023 - Maple Syrup is good for you

I saw that headline recently.  Here it is:  "pure maple syrup is not only high in antioxidants, but every spoonful offers nutrients like riboflavin, zinc, magnesium, calcium and potassium."

So woodpeckers know something!  But what about bears who love honey?  "Real Maple Syrup has significantly more calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, zinc, copper, and manganese than honey. These minerals do great work for your body including things like cell formation, maintaining healthy red blood cells, and immune support."

But wait!  Is it a case of all those  healthy syrups and sweetners going onto the wrong foods?  How to explain that it is expected that obese adults are expected to outnumber those who are not overweight by 2040?  Too many pancakes or waffles or french toast with maple syrup?  Or what?

With the UK numbers projected to be that 71% of people will be overweight by 2040, shouldn't we have some answers to "Why do so many of us get so fat?"

Scientific American looks at the question and answers with our current-thinking: a disorder of the energy balance.  The article says this has never been tested as it is too difficult and expensive to do correctly. This article pursues the question of the role of hormones (insulin) in stimulating fat accumulation.  And the sugars of note are sucrose and high-fructose corn syrup.  This hypothesis of obesity implies that the ongoing worldwide epidemics of obesity and type 2 diabetes (which stems to a great extent from insulin resistance) are largely driven by the grains and sugars in our diets. And that was the premise of the Aitkins Diet - eat as much saturated fat as you want, just don't eat carbohydrates. Isn't that the keto diet as well? The keto diet is known to help those with diabetes.  The full article is HERE

It seems to me that the scientific and medical communities are still trying to figure out how we get fat and how to get unfat.  I bet that won't happen by 2040.  Especially with the recipes that follow the articles - bacon-wrapped salmon followed by the "meatza" - a paleo pizza - with a ground beef and pork crust.   Yikes!

On to our photo of the day - it is pussy willow time.  I've brought home 200 stems, and realize there are more pots this year than last year at the two places where I do the decorative pots.  Back for more!

Dec 7 2021 - How Fat is Santa?

What about Santa and how fat he is?  Google wants to look up "how far is Santa Monica" and "how far is Santa".  That's because this is something we don't think about - but lots of people have written about this.

From the time "A Visit From St. Nicholas" was written in 1823, Santa has been described as chubby and plump, with a round little belly that shook when he laughed "like a bowl full of jelly."  Coca-Cola took this to extremes and made Santa just plain fat.  Supposedly this is "part of the charm".

And besides Coca-Cola, who else to blame? Trust Hollywood.  One article reported that it used to have a set of numbers – waist circumference, face shape, beard length – that Santas were supposed to adhere to.  Coca-Cola’s Santa, whom many in America try to emulate, is very round: round face, round nose, round stomach. Around the world, the legendary giver comes in all shapes and sizes. The Santa imitated in Europe is a thinner man with more squared-off features.

Roy Pickler is a professional Santa who dropped 88 pounds.  He's covered in CNN health
HERE. He was in the television contest "The Biggest Loser".  He is quoted as saying: “The world is going to have to change their acceptance of what Santa looks like,” Pickler said. “Santa is a role model, and kids don’t want to have a role model that’s fat.”

There is an update for our North American Santa. He has lost 25 pounds over the last 20 years.  Compared to Roy Pickler, Santa has 50 pounds to go.  I wouldn't call Roy skinny from the pictures, either.   It is entertaining to search for fat Santa - the photo stock companies have lots of versions - "full length body size profile side view of handsome fat overweight cheerful Santa".

And maybe we can't be too choosy in 2021 - there is a shortage of Santas due to COVID.  In one article it says that of the 8,000 Santas in the company's database, 355 have died in 2021 with COVID being the cause for the vast majority.  Really!  That's what the article says HERE

Here's the latest in the Up Against the Wall Series.   The background is the Bathurst Street Chess board in the park complete with graffiti.  The colours are wonderful and look regal - like an archeological dig where core samples of urban life are revealed.

Sep 4 2020 - TV Appearances

According to a New Scientist article in early 2000s, women really do look fatter on television, while men look more hunky, say researchers at the University of Liverpool. They investigated differences between 2D images such as TV pictures and 3D images produced using stereoscopic cameras.

It is a perceived wisdom in the broadcasting industry that TV cameras make people look about four kilograms(10 lbs)  heavier than they are.

Another article says:  "Your eyes are placed on your face horizontally, so you get a 'widescreen' view of the world," he said. "TV—specifically, NTSC—is nearly square (4:3), so you are significantly modifying your view of the world, not just by 'zooming in' and isolating the TV in your view, but also by changing your entire perspective." Watson said that it's not hard to see how your brain might try to compensate for this by stretching things out a little, therefore making people look wider.

And other articles say that any camera will have this effect.  To highlight the way that focal length can affect the shape of the face, Business Insider's article showed a person's head in a series of nine portraits at 20mm, 24mm, 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 70mm, 105mm, 150mm, and 200mm.   Take a look at it HERE.   This is known as the Hitchcok zoom with it expanding out.   That article says that the best way to avoid extra pounds is to use 88mm to 135mm lenses.  I am right on it.

I found this wonderful Georgian Bay scene in the archives.

If It Jiggles

That was Arnold Schwarzenegger.  He said:  "It's simple.  If it jiggles, it's fat"

After the Easter meals and chocolates I wonder about this question. Why does fat jiggle? While I don't have the answer from my searching this morning, I find out a few thing.  Muscle jiggles too, but it is heavier nd more dense.  And then there is the distinction between different kinds of fat.  It appears that not all fat does jiggle.  There are different ways in which our bodies store fat.  There is soft fat and hard fat.

1. Subcutaneous - This is the soft fat that is squishy and jiggly. It is held underneath the skin. This subcutaneous fat is what we see as rolls or as dimpled cellulite. It has mind of its own and you cannot flex it or suck it in. You cannot hold your breath and have a double chin tighten or a flabby arm feel firm. This fat is the ugly stuff that is shunned by society.

2. Visceral - It sits deep inside the abdominal cavity and it surrounds the vital organs. It has greater access to the blood supply than soft fat because of its location within the abdomen.  Clearly it is the more dangerous fat.

What about the fat jiggling machines?  This is a vibrating slimming  belt  that is supposed to jiggle the fat away.  A recent article says they have these benefits: strengthening bone density in postmenopausal women, improved muscle strength in elderly adults, and improved balance in elderly adults.  They don't help with weight loss, muscle toning or muscle sculpting.  I could check out my local Y to see if it has a machine.  These are now in gyms as an added bonus for strengthening exercises.

Here's our floral thought for the week.
