April 4 2022 - Earth Not Round

The earth is not round.  So the BBC Earth Facebook channel tells me in a short video. Does that mean it is flat?  No, not that either.  They say that it is an oblate spheroid. And that it isn't a fixed shape.  This makes me think of my Flaming Pear Flexifly filters, as they all have mathematical names.  There's an oblate one or two.

The tallest mountain, Mount Everest isn't the highest mountain from the centre of the Earth.  Mt. Chimborozo turns out to be the furthest from the centre of the Earth.  So there we are with another scientific correction.

And what do scientists call the Earth's shape? They call the Earth roundish.  Doesn't science has its own way of being precise and being vague.

In comparison to scientists who are able to get more precise about the exact shape and its fluctuations, the members of the Flat Earth Society make up wild unproven theories that physicists can only scoff at.  Like the "US model" where the Sun and Moon are 50 km in diameter and circle the disc-shaped Earth at a height of 5500 km with the stars above this on a rotating dome.

Poor scientists, here they are with the tools to describe all the amazing aspects of the Earth and how its shape functions.  And what awaits them? The simpleton, child world of Flat-Earth conspiracy followers who are growing in numbers.  It turns out that conspiracy minded people are tuned into flat earth ideas. There is great worry over the growing number of conspiracy followers rather than science followers and this could overturn political and education systems.

The advice within the science community today is to engage flat-Earthers thoughtfully and respectfully - a process acknowledged as going to be excruciatingly painful.  I just don't think that a sounds feasible or reasonable, either.

I went another route, and spent a bit of time with my Flexifly filters, finding an oblate series. This is oblate north pole and then the oblate south pole to present the Pearl Morissette Menu.  This matches up with the Earth being more like a football than a soccer ball.

The bottom picture?  The beet red velvet cake with sorrel and false cardamon.  You can see how miniature it is with these paper thin layers of cake and filling.  An amazing experience.

Jan 3 2022 - Flat Earthers and Fogo Island Inn

I had no idea that the owners of the Fogo Island Inn were Flat Earthers. It is particularly funny for this photo of the day.

"Find yourself at one of the four corners of the Earth.

Fogo Island Inn sits on an island, off an island, at one of the four corners of the Earth. Every one of our 29 one-of-a-kind guest rooms and suites has dramatic floor-to-ceiling windows that open onto the wildest and most powerful ocean on the planet. A stimulating relief from the numbing uniformity of modern times, the award-winning Inn is built on the principles of sustainability and respect for nature and culture. The Inn is a community asset, and 100% of operating surpluses are reinvested into the community to help secure a sustainable and resilient future for Fogo Island, Newfoundland."

I see beautiful landscape images of the Inn situated on the rocky shore.   Fogo Island Inn boasts that there are seven seasons on the Island.  They are listed HERE.

This exclusive and expensive inn is a worldwide destination, so I am curious about all the ads that I see for it.  Here's the National Post article from 2016 on the Inn and its luxury status.

Here's my version of a vacation experience. This is the east beach at Charles Daley Park and I was lucky to have a couple and their dog walk across it while I was taking pictures.  I thought the original straight line horizon picture was a little boring even with the Laker in the background. But now our image expresses the delights of walking on the Shores of Lake Ontario - the Inland Ocean. And proves the Earth is round.

Dec 30 2021 - Aliens to Finally Arrive in 2022

The surveys of what to expect in 2022 are published and we can guess ahead to 2022.

What do public citizens think is likely next year? Ipsos asked over 22,000 adults in 33 countries to give their personal predictions for 2022. "Although concerns persist about rising prices and the environment, most people felt things would be better in the New Year."

Here's the chart that got my attention:

How might we compare that with the percentage of people who think the world is flat?   Scientific American assessed that between 1.28 and 2% of the 10,000 YouGov respondents think the world is flat. - they had to analyze the questions to arrive at this number.  A Brazil survey found that 7% believed the earth to be flat.  The article interviewed one of those and he owned a restaurant, and did not live deep in the forest.  Another YouGov poll found that 3% of Britons thought the world flat.  So maybe it isn't surprising to see the chart above.

Deciding who to trust in 2022 might be a skill for 2022. We've been guessing this throughout 2021 and here's more proof.

A train day today.

The Flat Earth Society Has Members...Where?

There are people who consider the earth to be flat - they are vocal and prolific. With social media platforms they spread their message everywhere (I would say around the globe...)

LiveScience.com covered the flat earthers' explanation of the total lunar eclipse.
"According to flat-Earth conspiracy theorists, this astronomical phenomenon — known as a total lunar eclipse — was actually a rare opportunity to catch a glimpse of a mysterious "shadow object" that orbits the sun and occasionally passes in front of the moon from our point of view here, on an allegedly pizza-shaped Earth.
Although flat-Earthers believe our planet is flat as a pancake, they surprisingly seem to have come to the consensus that the sun and moon are spherical objects. However, these theorists posit that both the sun and the moon orbit Earth's north pole, hovering directly above the pancake and never passing around to the other side. If that were true, however, lunar eclipses as we know them could not happen, because the moon must be on the opposite side of the Earth from the sun for such an event to happen. So, flat-Earthers fabricated a new explanation for the shadow seen on the moon during an eclipse.
In a post on the website run by The Flat Earth Society, the conspiracy theorists offer no description of the so-called "shadow object" — no details about its size, shape, composition or origin. But the writers claim that this mysterious, shadowy figure causes all lunar eclipses. Oh, and it's totally invisible when it's not in front of the moon."

You can read the LiveScience article HERE. You can read the post by the Flat Earth Society at their wiki website.  Did you know that there are numerous flat earth societies?

Here are funny jokes and memes about the flat earth society(s).  I found these at boredpanda.com HERE.  I thought you'd enjoy the first one the most:
