May 22 2023 - DAY IN THE SUN

The May 24th weekend makes me think of the expression "Day in the Sun" - maybe because we have lots of days in the sun in the summer in Southern Ontario.

"When you have your day in the sun, you have achieved the highest possible level of success. You are at your peak. You are having a heyday. You are at your pinnacle or zenith of success."

So I guess summer is our pinnacle season.

Some people might say that I am being too ambitious for this weekend.  What about this expression - One swallow doesn’t make a summer

"Although something good has happened, it doesn’t mean the situation will continue to be good, so you shouldn’t count on it"

But then again, aren't we walking on sunshine starting this weekend?

That means:
"To be extremely happy"

There seems to be a vast number of expressions and idioms in English.  Is it English or French with the most idioms of any language?  One would think there might be a count by country.  The one count I can find is English:  "There are at least 25,000 idiomatic expressions in English."  Ask that question about French and you are sent to the idiom dictionary to scroll through them all.

Here's a beautiful country road in Pennsylvania. Makes me think of the expression - Smooth Sailing.  Better yet:  Roads are made for journeys, not destinations.

Sentimental Journey

Is Christmas-time a sentimental journey for you?  What a great definition this word has:  of or prompted by feelings of tenderness, sadness, or nostalgia.  You can ask anyone their memories of Christmas and you will be treated to a sentimental journey.

The phrase "Sentimental Journey" comes from a song written in 1944.  Les Brown and Ben Homer wrote the music and Bud Green the lyrics. It was Doris Day's first #1 hit. For me, its lyrics aren't overly poetic. In combination with the melody, the song seems to be remarkable at bringing forth the emotions that make up the sentimental experience:

Gonna take a sentimental journey
Gonna set my heart at ease
Gonna make a sentimental journey
To renew old memories

A second Jazz standard that seems to fall into the Sentimental Journey category is Canadian Sunset.  It was written by Eddie Heywood in 1956, with lyrics by Normal Gimbel. The lyrics that I easily remember are the 3rd verse:

A weekend in Canada, a change of scene
Was the most I bargained for
And then I discovered you and in your eyes
I found the love that I couldn't ignore

Our photo today speaks to the lyrics of Sentimental Journey.  The journey in the song is a train trip back home - "Countin' every mile of railroad track".  Our railroad is the Silverton and Durango.

The Journey

The Pacific Rim Bonsai Collection is located at the Weyerhaeuser Headquarters south of Seattle WA.  The trees are located outside in a viewing area so that each specimen can be appreciated.   This tree is a Korean Yew.

Reading about each tree was itself an experience.  Some of trees were created in interesting ways.  Some started their bonsai experience as a stunted trunk with few branches living in their natural growing environment.  They might be  hundreds of years old, living in difficult growing conditions that keep them stunted.  These special trees were dug up and transplanted and trained to grow in the small pots. Specimens are then grafted onto the living trunk and the training of a tree begins its journey.
