Aug 22 2024 - Peach Season

We are lucky in Ontario to take tender fruit for granted.  Peaches have been ripe for a few weeks.

I didn't realize that there are over 15 varieties of peaches grown here.  Definitely Red Havens are the best known - they are the canning and freezing peach.  If we compare to the U.S. there are over 100 different types of peaches grown there. And who would guess that peaches originated in China.  Well, maybe we would. All those vases with peach leaves in gorgeous colours.

If you didn't grow up in Niagara, then picking fruit is a novelty and fun.  If you grew up here, it was work for young teenagers in the summer.  Hard work.  I didn't have to pick peaches.  I would pick strawberries and make my savings there.  Peaches would make you itchy from all the fuzz on them, so strawberries seemed easier in comparison.

Here's a list of six well known peach farms. One of the best known is  is Cherry Avenue Farms.  I saw a Cherry Avenue transport truck as we drove to a railway convention in Minnesota - their cherry juice is widely distributed.

July 20 2022 - Peaches

What is the most popular fruit?  Is it bananas?  Actually it is tomatoes - but we don't treat them as fruit.  For what we consider fruit, it is in fact bananas.  But would we guess watermelon in the number 3 spot and apples number 4 after that?  Then we have oranges, grapes, mango and guava, pineapple, peaches, pears, pumpkin, papaya, plums, dates and in 15th spot strawberries.

The consumption of bananas is 116,780, 000 tons vs strawberries at only 8,885 tons.  Bananas are such a countable thing - over 100 billion bananas are consumed a year - that's 75% of the annual tropical fruit trade.

Our current fruit is peaches - they are ripe in Niagara.  The earliest ones are not freestone.  I wonder what variety I bought yesterday - the popular ones are listed as fantasia, harblaze, garnet beauty, harrow diamond, and red haven.  There are fifteen different varieties grown in Niagara.   But you don't find orchards with the names of varieties at the rows - not like grapes where the variety is nicely displayed.

With all these varieties of peaches we don't seem to purchase by  cultivar - not like apples.  The pint, quart and 4-quart baskets all say "peaches."  Maybe there isn't a lot of taste difference between the varieties.  You can compare the peach picking spots in Niagara.  and some of them list their varieties.  To pick your own peaches today comes with an entrance fee of $4 per person - I guess that's the "selfie-fee".  I go to the fruit stands in my area - they are all listed in this article on Niagara's fruit stands HERE.  It is nice to see them showcased and appreciated.

Today's floral abstract is a Gerbera.

Aug 5 2020 - Polka Dots with George Clooney

I saw some interesting pictures on Pinterest right after the vomiting fountain images - that's the benefit of all that surveillance.  Here's George Clooney in Polka Dots in one of the images for the Art Issue of W Magazine.

George Clooney has been on a lot of covers of magazines.  Definitely more than 100, so into the hundreds.  I began to wonder how he had time for acting and directing.  One headline says 4239 best Goerge Cloner images in 2020.  All that modelling he does - all kinds of headshots. Really, all kinds of candid shots - and he is photogenic.  Here's a really early one - and what is he wearing but polka dots!

All of the articles with these pictures talk about the evolution his hair: "One of the major characteristics of George Clooney hairstyle is how he wears his hair in clean cut. Gone are the days with his mullet and longer locks (which by the way were loved in the 80’s). Today, you’ll see George with neat trim and well-combed hair, especially on a red carpet premier."

So you can see what I mean, there isn't one picture of George and the polka dots, there are dozens of these for the 2013/14 W Art Issue cover by artist Yayoi Kusama.  See all the W Magazine covers HERE.

It is peach time!
