Quasars- that's the news of the mystery solved. This from CNN: Astronomers first discovered quasars, considered to be the brightest and most powerful objects in the universe, 60 years ago — but they didn’t understand their origin. Now, scientists think they have unlocked the mystery behind what ignites these celestial objects. Quasars have the same luminosity of a trillion stars contained in a space about the size of our solar system — which only hosts one star, while the Milky Way galaxy is home to at least 100 billion stars. The Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society gives an answer to quasars. I expect it is more than this eight word summary:
"It is the consequence of galaxies crashing together."

There are many big mysteries to be solved. The one that I focused in on is one that used to be asked of the earth, and still has supporters of the flat earth shape theory.
What is the shape of the universe?
"Scientists have a number of theories about the shape of the universe. But according to NASA, the leading theory is that the universe is flat, which leads them to believe that it’s infinite in size. However, since the universe has a known beginning, and perhaps an expected endpoint, we can only observe a finite volume of it. As NASA says, “All we can truly conclude is that the universe is much larger than the volume we can directly observe.”
What does it mean for the universe to be flat? Quantamagazine has an article on the topic with this: "whether the universe is flat — that is, whether two light beams shooting side by side through space will stay parallel forever, rather than eventually crossing and swinging back around to where they started, as in a closed universe"
So many interesting areas for us to explore and discover. |
