This is the first Year of the Garden in Canada. Here's the press release:
The Canadian Garden Council is happy to share with you that on Wednesday March 23 Canada’s politicians came together in the inclusive spirit of gardens and gardening in the House of Commons and voted unanimously to support on a motion to recognize 2022 the Year of the Garden in Canada. The first country in the world to proclaim a Year of the Garden.
It is a good move for 2022. We're not sure how much international travel will take place, and it is likely that families with children will want to have vacations closer to home without the complications of air travel. I can see RVs sales increasing and national parks getting even more booked up.
The invitation for 2022 is to "Live the Garden Life". This tourism program has gained momentum quickly over the last 2 or more years. Canada's Garden Route was developed a while ago. It is an informal and listing of Canadian gardens and garden experiences. They include public gardens and garden festivals, Parks Canada gardens, garden destinations, and garden networks and trails.
One of my garden presentations was about great public and private gardens nearby or within a few hours drive. There definitely are many public and private gardens open to the public in the Golden Horseshoe area. Here's the cover slide from the presentation - from top left to right:Royal Botanical Gardens, Oshawa Parkwood Estate, Vineland Stoney Ridge Winery. Centre row: Wilsonville Whistling Gardens, Niagara Falls Botanical Garden, Oshawa Peony Gardens, Bottom row: Jordan Village wisteria arbour, Tamworth Spindletree Gardens (now closed to the public).
I was at a Garden Council conference in 2015 and the prediction was the dwindling of gardening as we know it within 15 years. The aging demographics of gardeners was the driver of this prediction along with the rise of more entertainment on technical platforms preferred by the younger generations.
Who would have guessed that a pandemic would change things so quickly.
