CBC radio call in show on Friday at noon - the cost of prom night. The answer? High school prom night on average costs $1,000 for girls.
There are headlines on whether proms are antiquated or timeless. They certainly have an origin that seems long ago - proms represented two events: 1. sophisticated tea parties for male college students and their affluent families in the U.S. until the 20th century. 2. the Debutante ball where teenage girls from wealthy families were paraded around at a glamorous event.
The evolution to a major high school event came in the U.S. by the 1950s where a prom was an integral part of high school completion. I guess that remains the case if it is costing upwards of $1,000 for the event for girls - think hair, nails, dress, flowers - all the stuff of weddings.
In comparison, the big award event is graduation. That's where everyone wears a uniform of black judicial/professorial gown, It visually resembles a religious ceremony. Add to that - the event is run at warp speed to get it done. Not much of a celebration and definitely no red carpet. Kids wear lots of cute shoes, though.
How did high schools get to hosting activities where there is a King and Queen of the Prom which seem to be physical beauty/popularity competitions.
Looking from the outside, this doesn't seem to be on the road is to post-secondary training in colleges and universities. How didi this "social dating event" become the major milestone completion of high school?
Maybe Barbie has something to do with all of this. You can get a Barbie Queen of the Prom Game on eBay for $4,271.00 US. I think it is cheaper to go to the prom. Other places have it fir $39.99 - OK cheaper to play the board game.
Graduation dressing - just not the same as prom party wear.
