How many things have become official in the last 50 years? Who knows? People write about the "changes" in society and technology but have nothing to say about the bureaucratization of our lives. That's how I think of official - where rules and regulations become imbedded in activities.
The one area where Official is prominent? Definitely making a relationship official is something that has come to the forefront. Just how many dates make a relationship official? Is it lucky Seven? That's my guess. It sounds a bit odd compared to "official" in a government and legal sense.
For example, consider the official symbols of Canada. They include The Coat of Arms, the national flag, the beaver, the national anthem, Lacrosse, Hockey, the maple tree, the national horse, the Maple Leaf tartan and the national colours. They are all explained HERE.
Would a "couple" who are going to make it "official" need to agree on some of these things? Like their song, their colours, and so on. When they have the conversation it is called the DTR or Define the Relationship conversation. That's the official phrase that goes with this.
There are no DTR jokes. There are lots of marriage jokes. They are astonishingly ill-humoured. So it isn't surprising that no one wants to take on DTR jokes.
I was wondering if official might become more predominant. Look up official apple and you get the official site of apple. Look up official day and the national day calendar pops up. It is National Grape Popsicle Day. Now that's something to ruminate on.
