One of the headlines today is that the European Union is banning 8 artificial smoke flavourings - and the one that is getting the attention in the UK will affect the most popular potato chip (crisp) - smoky bacon potato chips. The flavourings are associated with cancer risks. They are used in many processed foods, so the ban will be noticed.
Remember the fat-free potato chips? They got banned too.
And there's an article about a product called the One Chip Challenge that was associated with the death of a 14 year-old. It was taken off the shelves. The snack maker is Paqui and sold the single tortilla made with he hottest peppers available in a coffin-shaped box. It was a hit on TikTok as people attempted the challenge of eating the tortilla. It has been dropped from the product line.
I realize how little I know about snacks - there are all kinds of "chips" - shrimp chips made of shrimp, quinoa chips, banana chips, max protein chips (I wonder what they really are). There are Thai sticky rice chips - all kinds of things to snack on.
The United States, then France, then the U.K. are the biggest eaters of potato chips. And in the U.S., it seems Pennsylvania is the potato chip capital of the World. That's according to potatonewstoday.com who say that the epicentre is the town of Hanover and several counties around it are also the biggest producers of potato chips in the world.
