July 10 2024 - Feel-good

Feel-good - that's an expression that has to end with a noun.  It isn't a thing itself, or so I don't think so.  Happiness and well-being.  Seemingly simple and important ways of being.

But when you see feel-good and movie or novel, you are deep into the romance genre that is targeted to young women. Perhaps a broader audience.

Vanity Fair has the 37 feel-good movies to boost your mood and their subtitle says:

From silent-film classics to modern rom-com hits, the best feel-good movies have a timeless power to bring out smiles—and sometimes a few tears too.

The list starts with City Lights (1934) but somehow fails to mention Charlie Chaplin, who produced, directed and starred in the movie.  There's Harvey, Singin'  in the Rain, Roman Holiday - all obvious choices.

It fails to include some we would expect and even includes surprise candidates - Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1985) which seems more of a comedy satire to me.

Would you consider Groundhog Day (1993) a feel-good movie?  I think so, in the end. I certainly did feel good when he woke up every day to Sonny and Cher. The description from Vanity Fair says:  "If you get to the closing snowfall scene and your heart doesn’t swell two sizes, see your cardiologist."  Isn't that a great writer.

Check out the list and tell me what you agree with and think is missing.  It is HERE

And how did I get to wondering about feel-good movies?  It is July and it is time for the Hallmark Christmas Classic Festival - it goes from June 29 to July 27 every Saturday.  Mid-year feel-good top-up time.

I do think a Fantasy of Trees Christmas in July Festival would be fun.

We did this picture in watercolour class.  Don't you think it matches the Hallmark sentimental approach to things?  Shiny reflections of "sunshine" with weepy shadows blowing away.  Perfect!
