Aug 17 2024 - The Toil Bowl Collapses

So what does an arch named the Toilet Bowl look like?  It has collapsed.  Isn't the name a bit odd.  What is the similarity?  One headline does say it is a swimming hole - but wait that's a different Toilet Bowl -  in Hawaii. There are other "Double Arches" in the same park.  Lots of double arches in this area. But supposedly these are all its nicknames.  The formation "used to form a ring suspended over the waters of Lake Powell at Rock Creek Bay".

The one that has collapsed is at Lake Powell in Utah.  It has a number of names -  the Double Arch, Crescent Pool, the Toilet Bowl, and  Hole in the Roof.  I wonder if these might be different arches as when I start to look things up a number of articles are showing a different arch and not the one that collapsed.

I couldn't figure out what had collapsed from the pictures - I guess someone had the same concern I did, as the picture has a circle and arrow to show the place of collapse.

There's an article HERE that describes and shows  video of the first collapse - although it seems to miss the 'falling rock' part.  It shows pictures of people jumping into the water from the "hole" above when it was intact.  In the video, there were people on the rock and in the water when it collapsed. A Volkswagen-sized rock fell off.  Then a full collapse happened later. Lucky no one was there as they seemed oblivious to the perils after the partial collapse.

What I found notable int he article was this paragraph:

"Salt Lake County mom Monica Miles, who is visiting Lake Powell with 60 extended family members between two large houseboats, explained how it’s a fun landmark that her kids always love to go see."

Sixty extended family members!  That's a lot of family all together.

There are some great pictures of Colorado rock formations in my picture gallery, but this one popped up - a rare rock garden plant in the a friend's garden.
