Aug 17 2024 - The Toil Bowl Collapses

So what does an arch named the Toilet Bowl look like?  It has collapsed.  Isn't the name a bit odd.  What is the similarity?  One headline does say it is a swimming hole - but wait that's a different Toilet Bowl -  in Hawaii. There are other "Double Arches" in the same park.  Lots of double arches in this area. But supposedly these are all its nicknames.  The formation "used to form a ring suspended over the waters of Lake Powell at Rock Creek Bay".

The one that has collapsed is at Lake Powell in Utah.  It has a number of names -  the Double Arch, Crescent Pool, the Toilet Bowl, and  Hole in the Roof.  I wonder if these might be different arches as when I start to look things up a number of articles are showing a different arch and not the one that collapsed.

I couldn't figure out what had collapsed from the pictures - I guess someone had the same concern I did, as the picture has a circle and arrow to show the place of collapse.

There's an article HERE that describes and shows  video of the first collapse - although it seems to miss the 'falling rock' part.  It shows pictures of people jumping into the water from the "hole" above when it was intact.  In the video, there were people on the rock and in the water when it collapsed. A Volkswagen-sized rock fell off.  Then a full collapse happened later. Lucky no one was there as they seemed oblivious to the perils after the partial collapse.

What I found notable int he article was this paragraph:

"Salt Lake County mom Monica Miles, who is visiting Lake Powell with 60 extended family members between two large houseboats, explained how it’s a fun landmark that her kids always love to go see."

Sixty extended family members!  That's a lot of family all together.

There are some great pictures of Colorado rock formations in my picture gallery, but this one popped up - a rare rock garden plant in the a friend's garden.

July 1 2023 - That most famous iceberg found

The fame of the Titanic can only be matched by the iceberg that it hit.  The iceberg was distinctive with three peaks. There are photos of the iceberg taken by the chief steward of the SS Prinz Adalbert with a streak of red paint along the iceberg's base.  That had gotten his attention along with the three peaks.

And the history of icebergs is astonishing: "The iceberg began its slow journey to the North Atlantic over three thousand years ago. Again, we can only guess at the exact details, but the story likely began with snowfall on the western coast of Greenland somewhere around 1,000 BCE. After a few months, this snow has been turned into a more compacted form called firn, which then over subsequent decades is compressed into dense ice by the weight of newer snow on top of it.

The frozen water in these glaciers is slowly forced further westward toward the sea. When they finally reach the coast of the Arctic Ocean, the lapping tides break off chunks of the ice, and icebergs are calved from the glacier, some 30 centuries after their source water was first deposited. The iceberg that sank the Titanic began its journey as a rough contemporary of King Tutankhamun, entire civilizations rising and falling while it made its slow march to infamy."

Yesterday a CBC radio item said that it is now known that icebergs migrate north and south, living on average 100 - 200 years. And a team of scientists say that they have found the famous iceberg with paint on the side, along with a tea cup.  And sufficient compositional analysis to confirm the identity.

The tea cup got my attention. I realized that the segment might have been on the This is Thatshow - an entertainment show that fabricates the issues.  So it seems unlikely that the Titanic iceberg will get towed into Halifax any time soon. It has likely passed on.

This is the rose arch at Longwood.

Repeat Again

This is Groundhog Week!  The Groundhog Day movie is a movie on the theme of repetition.  What about unnecessary repetition?  Wouldn't that be what redundancy is?  Do you think Bill Murray's character felt the repetitions were redundant? Here are expressions that could be termed 'groundhog moments' in celebration of the movie.  Redundant is what they are:
  • a moment in time – A moment is essentially a period of time.
  • ATM machine – ATM already stands for “Automated Teller Machine”
  • true fact – By definition, facts are true.
  • join together – How else would something join?
  • free gift – Because when’s the last time you had to pay for a gift?
  • added bonus – The word bonus indicates something outside of what’s expected, so of course it’s added.
  • end result – Results always come at the end.
  • final outcome – Related to the above, an outcome signifies the end, or finality.
  • plan ahead – Planning always refers to the future, or what’s ahead.
  • repeat again – Ah, the irony here!
  • close proximity – To be close to something is to be in proximity.
  • past experience – Experience refers to what has happened in the past.
  • most unique – Unique implies there’s nothing like it, so one cannot compare it to something else.
  • rise up – When rising, there’s no other way to go but up.
  • the reason why – A reason explains the why.
  • new innovations – An innovation is something that did not exist before, i.e., it is new in and of itself.
  • unexpected surprise – If you were expecting it, it wouldn’t be a surprise.
  • advance notice – When giving someone notice, you’re always doing so in advance.
What redundant phrase do you find yourself using most often? Are you having Groundhog moments? This wonderful list is courtesy of proofreadnow.com

The orchid arch at Longwood is twelve feet high and contains more than 600 orchids. The reconstruction of the Longwood Main Found Garden is shown in this youtube video time-lapse :https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjuioDG74Jk
