How many hands have held the second largest diamond to be found? I see one that is meant to be considered female - long pink nails. And I see one that looks male - pretty big fingers and short nails. And then there's a picture of the Botswana President holding the big chunk. And then whoever first found it. And then whoever prepared it for transportation. There will be a detailed reporting of this along with measurements and pictures along the way. What a lot of security there must be.
I am interested in how many people have held this diamond. But alas, that is not the topic of interest in the news. What is of interest is that this is the largest diamond found in 119 years.
That means a lot of money. A smaller diamond from the same Botswana mine was sold in 2016 for $63 million.
How big is big? 2,492 carats. The company is Lucara and they have the news on the website with the male hand holding the diamond - that's the common image everywhere - and a second picture showing the diamond in comparison to a golf ball, tweezers and Lucara diamond box. The pink-nailed hand doesn't show up on their website. It could be something else altogether, knowing news media.
The Lucara headline calls it an "epic 2,492 carat diamond". You can check out their photo gallery and see great shots of various diamonds. Hover on each picture and the stone and its carat size is displayed. Gorgeous pictures.
I went looking for my own Tiffany pictures and only found the umbrella front window in Carmel, California. I guess diamonds are not that interesting to me.
