Marilyn's Photos - Jan 4 2026 - First We Take Manhattan

First we take Manhattan,

Then we take Berlin.

Leonard Cohen’s song came to mind with the events of the last few days, where the U.S. President says he has over Venezuela.  Leonard Cohen said it was a terrorist song - a response to terrorism.  He says:  “There’s something about terrorism that I’ve always admired.  The fact that there are no alibis or no compromises.  That position is always very attractive.”  Doesn’t that ring true of Trump.  No alibis there.

I always wondered about why Manhattan and then Berlin:  The reference to Manhattan was for finance and Berlin for European influence.  The Lyrics are HERE.  There are more of Cohen’s own comments on the song following the lyrics in the link given.

“I remember there was a great poem by Irving Layton that I once read, I’ll give you a paraphrase of it. It was ‘well, you guys blow up an occasional airline and kill a few children here and there’, he says. ‘But our terrorists, Jesus, Freud, Marx, Einstein. The whole world is still quaking…

And I wonder what  country comes after Venezuela in Trump’s version of the song? I see a warning over Cuba being incompetent by Marco Rubio just a few hours ago.  And Greenland has posted some sort of “friendly reminder” after the Venezuela invasion.
