Feb 22 2023 - If you Live in Grimsby

So who is Ryan?  If I live in Grimsby, Ryan wants to speak to me.

Ryan is a popular name, so there are a lot of celebrities named Ryan.  First up, there's Ryan's World (formerly Ryan ToysReview).  We looked at this Ryan a few years ago.

It is a children's YouTube channel for children aged 2–6 featuring Ryan Kaji along with his mother (Loann Kaji), father (Shion Kaji), and twin sisters (Emma and Kate). The channel usually releases a new video every day. One is Huge Eggs.  Surprise Toys challenge has 2.0 billion views as of January 2023.

The family made over $250 million in 2021 - it has been listed in Forbes as the highest-earning YouTube channel.  A lawsuit was filed against Google over inappropriate advertisements and paid sponsor content.  There are now new rules on what is on YouTube for children's content.

Which of the other Ryans would it be?  Ryan has been a top boys' name in the United States. from 1976 to 2010.  There are a few headlining content.  Ryan Reynolds is a Canadian/American actor. There's Ryan Fraser in soccer, Ryan O'Reilly in hockey and Ryan Alford on the Emergencies Act.

Here's an excellent Ryan joke:

I think Ryan Gosling is mature enough now..
for us to call him Ryan Goose.

A beautiful trestle bridge today.

Jan 31 2022 - Obscene Vintage Ads

Today's question is: How and why are there now "Obscene Vintage Ads" ads popping up on astronomy and science sites.  What is Gazillions selling?   You can see the two ads on the astronomy site.  I am interested in that pulling object in space - every 18.18 minutes.

Gazillions is a site of tabloid celebrity news labelled as entertainment, lifestyle, and money.  And there are lots of ads on it.  I guess to get your attention, it has found that advertising obscene ads works. I was wondering what kind of site it was so it must work.  It does have a lot of images of obscene ads when you do a query.  I guess people are curious about this as  there are lots of articles and pictures on banned old ads, obscene ones, sexist ones, hilariously offensive ones and so on.

Bored Panda has them, Comedy.com has them, Pinterest has lots.  These include Cocaine Toothache Drops, Doctors smoke Camels, and Start Cola earlier (picture of baby). They move on to Train your wife variations such as  Keep her where she belongs, along with wife-savers.  Then it moves on to the sexual ones with titles like Orgy.  They never stop scrolling, so there must be a lot of them.

Do a search for images on "banned obscene old ads" and they eventually evolve to most controversial sex-ed books and books that you would ban.  You can find dirty boat names so offensive and rude... - with this search.

Curiosity is a universal human characteristic. And posed as the question:  How bad is it?  - well that's a hook that is hard to resist. So how bad/obscene can old ads be? There are lots of examples to choose from.

This is Millie last week.

Jan 16 2022 - Seniors in Grimsby ...

Wouldn't it be Google who lets everyone know that I am a senior?  I expect so as I think I have to give a year of birth to get a google account.  And google is the searching engine that is used most often.  So I get the "Seniors in Grimsby..."  headlines.  There are seniors singles in Grimsby, best seniors real estate in Grimsby, seniors lawyers, and so on.

Do they have groups with names like seniors?  Or is the world divided into two parts:  Seniors and Non-Seniors?

A short bit of digging and I find this website:  titangrowth.com along with a game to understand target audience age groups and gender.  It is HERE.   I am transported back to an MBA Marketing 101 course.

Let’s play a game called “Guess Who”. From seeing a search query, you will guess the user’s age and gender.

And here's the advice:

"Make sure to use Google Ads’ Age and Gender Targeting options to narrow your target audience by adding bid adjustments. These raise or lower the amount you are willing to pay for ads served to a specific demographic. Existing data makes it clear which demographics perform better than others. Numbers don’t lie. Your data is already there. Guessing will limit your ROI. The bids are just waiting to be modified.

If you are dealing with a company that designs jackets specifically for men, then you have a few options regarding gender targeting. For example, you could:

  • Completely exclude women from your audience. Any users who Google believes are women will not see your ads.
  • Add a bid modifier of -50% for women. If we assume that women are less likely to buy mens’ jackets, you can pay less for their clicks but still serve them ads.
  • Determine whether women buy jackets at the same rate as men, and if so, leave the bid modifier as is. By ruling out customers without sufficient data to support the decision, you risk missing out on a potentially significant source of revenue.
  • Add a positive bid modifier if you see that women actually convert at a higher rate than men. Maybe these leather jackets are popular gifts.
Well, that deals with adults and leather jackets.

I still don't know the names of those other groups - just the labels they have been given by sociologists.  You know those - millennial, Gen X, and so on.

Here's a happy  summer moment from the St. Catharines Garden Tour a few years ago.  These are three sister chicks in the foreground and the mother in the background.  Such beautiful living art.

Feb 7 - Successful Lawyers in Beamsville

One of the sponsored ads on the Weather Channel is "The Most Successful Lawyers in Beamsville" and the picture is of a young woman with long hair and casual top.  This is a 'dating-style' picture, rather than the picture of what you'd expect a lawyer to look like.  And what makes them choose Beamsville rather than Grimsby?  It all gives rise to curiosity to find.

That's because we know what a 'stock lawyer' looks like. Photo stock pictures show us people dressed in dark suits and white shirts.  There is an exception -  pictures from the careerist.com in an article about successful Chinese Female lawyers.  Are the three women in the pictures are lawyers - they have no names, so I expect they are stock pictures of some sort. Their clothes are too colourful to "represent" lawyers in the workplace.  The article is about Chinese lawyers in top firms, but it is too liberal with personal opinions rather than facts.

The fashion advice from lawandstyle.ca matches up with the images of lawyer on stock services:

"Choose conservative pieces: sheath dresses with jackets, shoes in pristine condition, simple jewelry and accessories. For skirts, go with knee-length or slightly above the knee. Always wear a cardigan or jacket if you’re meeting with clients or if you’re wearing a sleeveless top. To make daring fashion choices when you’re just starting out takes the focus off your talent as a lawyer during that precarious time when you’re trying to stake out space and build your identity at the firm. Once you’ve proven yourself to be bright, capable and hard-working, then you can experiment with fashion within your comfort zone (and that of your workplace)."

What is the advice for men?
  • Well-kept facial hair is fine. Just no soul patch. Ever
  • When the collars or cuffs start to wear, toss the shirt
  • Skip the bow tie
So I completed my investigation by googling "best lawyer in beamsville" and took a look at the top three lines of images - all wearing dark suits, white/light shirts.  After that, the flaws of google retrieval come forth and anything can show up - purple bricks ads abound.

Our Valentine today is the spring flower "Bleeding Heart".
