Sep 6 2023 - 44 The Number

Baxter typed in "44" so let's check it out.

44 is a repdigit and palindromic number in decimal. It is the tenth 10-happy number, and the fourth octahedral number.

Repdigit? The word is a portmanteau of "repeated" and "digit". Examples are 11, 666, 4444, and 999999.

The concept of a repdigit has been studied under that name since at least 1974, and earlier Beiler (1966) called them "monodigit numbers".The Brazilian numbers were introduced later, in 1994, in the 9th Iberoamerican Mathematical Olympiad that took place in Fortaleza at Brazil. The first problem in this competition, proposed by Mexico, was as follows:

A number n > 0 is called "Brazilian" if there exists an integer b such that 1 <  b < n – 1 for which the representation of n in base b is written with all equal digits. Prove that 1994 is Brazilian and that 1993 is not Brazilian.

Palindromic? A palindromic number (also known as a numeral palindrome or a numeric palindrome) is a number (such as 16461) that remains the same when its digits are reversed.

Octahedral? An octahedral number belongs to a figurate number and it is the number of spheres in an octahedron built from closely packed spheres. First, a few octahedral numbers (where n = 0, 1, 2, 3…….) are 0, 1, 6, 19, and so on.

Thanks Baxter, I had no idea there was so much meaning packed into 44.

Alternately, in terms of numbers, Baxter could be giving a clear and simple message that Angel 44 - one of the guardian angels - has chosen to show him that he is not alone, and that we who live with him are a blessing to him.

He lies on the  with his feet in the air, and ears over the keyboard.  Is it a repdigit day or an angel day?

May 26 2023 - Skunked

Baxter was in the vicinity of a skunk last week.  When Baxter lunged into the house in the night,  smell swirled in with him as though it were a solid substance.  Millie barked and chased around the house as though the skunk had come inside. She darted everywhere looking for the invader.

Here's the advice for a skunked dog:

The Best Solution

  1. ¼ cup of baking soda.
  2. 1-2 teaspoons of mild dishwashing detergent like Ivory Snow.
  3. 1 quart of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide solution.
  4. Mix in a bucket and use immediately.
  5. Work the foaming mixture well into the coat.
  6. Leave on for five minutes.
  7. Rinse with warm water.
  8. Follow with dog shampoo if desired.

Can you imagine working anything into a cat's coat?  Let's hope that 14 to 21 days is the distance between The Moon and New York City - the estimate when Baxter will return to smelling like a cat.

Did you know that skunks can spray as far as 15 feet? The solutions include vinegar, lemon juice and tomato juice to get rid of the smell.

The advice for cats is to "rub him down" and follow this with a standard bath.  Ha ha! Who has heard of a cat getting a standard bath?  Or a "rub down."

So we conclude with a silly skunk joke:

Three skunks are walking down a street together when they come to an intersection...
Skunk number one says, "My instincts tell me to go left."
Skunk number two says, "My instincts tell me to go right."
Skunk number 3 says "Hey, my end stinks too, but it doesn't talk to me."

Baxter at his best with Dezi.

Feb 10 2022 - Bxgter is Big X 2

Pinterest sends me ideas each day, mostly on gardens and wreaths.I particularly paid attention as these were wreaths I made and posted on Pinterest for the Fantasy of Trees.

And then I noticed the  pictures of big cats along with the wreaths.  This was the picture - it looks photoshopped - and the comment compares the cat to a Lab.  It does look even bigger than a dog.

Guinness Records have the largest Maine Coon to be bigger than a dog - the world's longest domestic cat is 48.5 inches long (123 cm).

Reddit had a photo that shows a normal cat and a Maine Coon.

Baxter is part Maine Coon and he is a big cat, but it seems he would be half the size of one these giants.

We have our own siege here with a meowing cat in the night. Millie is trying very hard to defend her place - growling and barking on and off through the night.  Once we got up this morning, this cat seemed to be everywhere I go - at the office window, the front door, the back porch.  It stares at Millie as she barks like a rabid dog.  Baxter and the cat sit together, so that's a poor show on Baxter's part.  On the other hand, who needs cats fighting.

We're hoping we have more success than Ottawa and Windsor as we wait it out till the light comes up and the cat convoy moves on.

More Wisteria today.

May 11 2021 - The Word Lady

I hadn't received a post from the Word Lady for a little while - they would come in every few months.

They aren't coming in again - today in the Globe and Mail is her obituary.  She died at the end of April from a virulent and rapid form of brain cancer.

She is the founding editor of the Canadian Oxford Dictionary.  She was Editor-in-Chief of Canadian Dictionaries for the Oxford University Press in Canada from 1991 to 2008, when OUP closed the Canadian dictionary department.  We owe the creation and publication of the Canadian Oxford Dictionary to her.

The Canadian oxford Dictionary
Edited by Katherine Barber

‘a unique reference book for all Canadians’, Robert MacNeil, Time Magazine

The Canadian Oxford Dictionary was the runaway bestseller of 1998, spending over a year on the Globe and Mail's bestseller list and winning the Canadian Booksellers Association's Libris awards for Non-fiction Book of the Year and Specialty Book of the Year. The dictionary combines coverage of international English with information on English as it is particularly used in Canada. Definitions are presented so that the meaning most familiar to Canadians appears first and foremost.

The Dictionary features 2,200 uniquely Canadian words and senses, 350 usage notes, 7,000 idiomatic expressions, and so on.

What would be typical Canadian expressions?

Double-double
A common way for a Canadian to order their coffee—double cream, double sugar.

Eh
Pronounced ‘ay’ and used in 99.99% of sentences uttered by Canadians, it is the most versatile of the Canadian slang words. Most popularly posed as a question to mean ‘pardon?’ or ‘don’t you agree?’, it can also be used to affirm or emphasize just about anything it follows.

Fill yer boots
This hospitable saying comes from the island of Newfoundland off the east coast of the Canadian mainland, meaning ‘do whatever you want’ or ‘help yourself to as much as you’d like’.

Molson muscle
Molson is a common brand of Canadian beer, and the muscle being referred to is the belly. It’s simple math: Beer + Belly = Molson + Muscle.

Don't you find these such comforting expressions?  A clear indication of being Canadian.
Baxter looks like a thinking cat here. His location does not indicate that to be the case: There's a chipmunk nest nearby, and I think the bunny nest is below the bird's nest spruce.

Oct 25 2020 - Halloween Countdown with Celebrity Costumes

What can surpass the Elton John fun outfit yesterday?  The answer is Hollywood celebrity costumes.  I say "sort of" as some of these are creepy and some are hysterically funny.

I took a look through 2018 and found Kim Kardashian and Jonathan Cheban as - who else?  Sonny and Cher. Isn't he perfect?

This one makes me curious about how the whole costume works:  Heidi Klum as Jessica Rabbit.

These pictures are from 2018, you can see the 2019 highlights at US News HERE.  And it will only be a week before we see this year's highlights.

Our story today is a day with Baxter and Millie.  You can see Baxter in Millie's basket, then the two of them about to go outside, Millie wrestling with the Japanese Forest Grass, and then having a rest back on the sofa. There were leaves to chase, hostas to sit on (squash), and circles to run around in.

Oct 16 2020 - The UN Knows if you are old

Many people my age don't want to be old. Boomers don't want to be called or named 'old'. - preferring 'older'.  However the United Nations has agreed that 65 and older is denoted as old age.  That is the age nearing or surpassing the life expectancy of human beings.  So when first world boomers think that 80 year olds should be defined as old, perhaps they are correct.  In Africa, old age is defined as 55 years old.  What Wikipedia does say is that it is not a biological stage and varies culturally and historically.

What if being old has a social definition to  I look to our world of jokes to provide us with some signs that others might decide whether a person is old:
  1. Kidnappers are not very interested in you.
  2. In a hostage situation you are likely to be released first.
  3. No one expects you to run...anywhere.
  4. People call at 9 pm and ask did I wake you?
  5. People no longer view you as a hypochondriac.
  6. There is nothing left to learn the hard way.
  7. Things you buy now won't wear out.
  8. You can eat supper at 4 pm.
  9. You no longer think of speed limits as a challenge.
  10. You sing along with elevator music.
  11. Your eyes won't get much worse.
  12. Your joints are more accurate meteorologists than the national weather service.
Today's pictures illustrate my interpretation of the contrast between cat-come- when-called and dog-come-when-called.  Baxter looks like he's coming over and will decide whether to hit me with that intense look.  Millie wants to know if I'll still love her when she reaches me.

July 10 2020 - Irregardless is a word

What would make me connect Flat earthers with the word irregardless seeming to 'regain' standing as a useable word?

Irregardless is a nonstandard synonym for regardless, which means “without concern as to advice, warning, or hardship,” or “heedless.” Its nonstandard status is due to the double negative construction of the prefix ir- with the suffix -less.

Here's Merriam Webster's first Frequently Asked Question:

Is irregardless a word?

Yes. It may not be a word that you like, or a word that you would use in a term paper, but irregardless certainly is a word. It has been in use for well over 200 years, employed by a large number of people across a wide geographic range and with a consistent meaning. That is why we, and well-nigh every other dictionary of modern English, define this word. Remember that a definition is not an endorsement of a word’s use.

Maybe our recoiling from a double negative word is consistent with the slang of double negative expressions:
  • That won't do you no good.
  • I ain't got no time for supper.
  • Nobody with any sense isn't going.
  • I can't find my keys nowhere.
  • She never goes with nobody.
  • John says he has not seen neither Alice or Susan all day.
  • I didn't steal nothing.
  • He ain't never told no lies.
Let's enjoy our double-negative joke:

A grammar teacher was lecturing to his class one day, "In English," he said, "a double negative forms a positive. In some languages though, such as Russian, a double negative is still a negative."
"However," he pointed out, "there is no language wherein a double positive can form a negative."
A voice from the back of the room piped up, "Yeah, right."

Here are two flat earth jokes that eluded me yesterday:

If the Earth was flat, wouldn't all the water fall off?
The water does fall.  But then the Elephants supporting the Earth drink it to survive, then send it back using their trunks.  That's where rain comes from.

If the earth was flat,
Cats would have pushed everything off it by now.

Baxter would be in there with them.

June 5 2020 - Bee Culture

We don't think much about bees even though they are out there now buzzing away on the flowers in the garden.  I wondered what world records involve bees.  That turned out to be a shock.  The records in the Guinness Records seem unpleasant at best, and at worst fearful and just plain creepy.  Here are the headlines:

"Man covered in 1.1 million bees sets record"
"Longest duration with head fully covered in bees"
"Heaviest mantle of bees"
"A Toronto man just broke the bee beard world record"

So we will make a u-turn to the fun of bee jokes.  These come from a bee blog:
What’s black and yellow and flies at 30,000 feet? A bee on an airplane.
What buzzes, is black and yellow and goes along the bottom of the sea? A bee in a submarine.
What do they call a bee that can’t quit talking? Blabb-bee.
What is a swarm of really small queen bees called? The royal wee.
The bees’ favourite guns?  BeeBee guns, I suppose.

What do unionized bees ask for? More honey and shorter working flowers.

Question: Wanna listen to some music?  I've got bee-bop, Beethoven, Bee-yonce, the Bee-Tles, Bee-stie Boys, Cros-bee, Stills and Nash, Justin Bee-Bee.
Response:  Do you have anything from Sting?

And our helper on the scanner is Baxter.

Feb 10 2020 - Doggie Talk Bubbles

How would my little dog Dezi's words look in 'talk bubbles'?  Would she speak in Comic Sans?  Vincent Connare, the inventor of Comic Sans wrote the casual script typeface for Microsoft.  They wanted something that would work with cartoon bubbles for children.

It became one of the default fonts in Windows 95, much to his surprise.  It was extensively distributed - by Apple, and others.

In an interview with CBC on Saturday, he didn't complain about not receiving any special compensation. He said it was unusual to have a job as a typeface designer and that he loved his job at Microsoft.  He was young - the font came out in 1995.  He was born in 1960, and currently lives in France.  So he's made enough to retire on his various typeface creations. His website is quite brief - it is HERE.

Comic Sans is loved and hated -  its intended use was specific - to be casual in informal documents and children's material.

The CBC interviewer asked - should Rudy Giuliani use Comic Sans as a font in one of his submission letters to the Department of Justice?  Connare laughed and then responded that there are restrictions on the fonts that can be used in legal documents.  Comic Sans MS is not likely not allowed anywhere.

Could it be used for a sandwich shop sign?  He found that a curious choice. Not a typical use.

It got me thinking. Which font would Dezi and Baxter speak in if I were to write a story?  Baxter's tail tells many stories. He swooshes and wags his tail often - he is most curious about things and attentive to all movements in the yard.  I interpret his swooshing as friendly and dominant.  You can look up cat charts that show variations of cat speak.

Dezi's tail wags a lot but doesn't swoosh that I've seen.  I don't know of any dogs who swoosh their tails.  Supposedly wagging to the right is friendly and wagging to the left is trepidation or anger.  And then they have lots of things to say with their body positions, ears, and mouths, and their various wiggles.  It seems they have lots more to say than cats do. This makes me think they each need their own font.

Our Valentines continue today in graffiti and grunge findings.
