April 13 2020 - Haircuts

The thing we took for granted just one step behind toilet paper:  hair cuts.

There are many pictures of strange and unusual haircuts, and the advice that would have helped if received before the activity was undertaken:

1. Don't cut hair too short
2. Someone else needs to do the back
3. Let the hair on the top of your head stay long
4. Watch out for your ears
5. Don't wear a sweater

Australia has reversed a decision to limit hairdressing appointments to 30 minutes following a backlash.  That was on March 26th.  I wanted to know what happened after that, but the press has gone silent on this story.

In South Africa, a hairdresser was charged with attempted murder after defying a doctor's order to self-quarantine.

Last week, the B.C. daily COVID-19 briefing had the province's top doctors 'apologizing' to her hairdresser after giving herself a home hairdo.

There are Instagram Live and Facebook Live classes for haircutting online.  Here's a schedule of what's offered in the next two weeks:
Thursday, April 16 at 2 p.m. EST – Decisions = Destinations with Richard Mannah (Instagram)
Monday, April 20 at 2 p.m. EST – Crescent Method with Larisa Love (Facebook)
Thursday, April 23 at 2 p.m. EST – Holistic Success with Richard Mannah (Instagram)

I wondered what a crescent method might be.  The seriousness of hair comes across with the April 23rd session title 'holistic'.

Our image today is another  hosta colouring activity.

More on Mayer Spivack

Nova Spivack had numerous stories about his father.  Did you get a chance to read his memoir?  His father was an artist, scientist and inventor.  He has also preserved his father's blog - it is HERE.

At a formal reception at the home of an Italian Duke, he took one of the lit candles from the reception and wore it on his head for the entire night.  He was introduced to various members of the Venetian nobility and the European art world while balancing his burning little candle on his head, not acknowledging it.

"... whenever my father was invited to a black tie event, he would reluctantly attend, dressed appropriately, except with a black dress sock tied around his neck instead of a bow tie. Of course he would never acknowledge this to anyone, and they were all too shocked to point it out to him."

"He was such a good inventor that corporations like Polaroid, Otis Elevator and others, would hire him to come up with inventions. I remember him once telling me that he made 100 inventions for Polaroid in 100 days."

Nova speaks highly of his father's art, but I was unable to find any pictures of his sculptures and other art work to show you. So we'll conclude and move on to today's
National Observance Day:  it is National Presidential Joke Day on August 11th.

RONALD REAGAN  “I am not worried about the deficit. It is big enough to take care of itself.”

GEORGE W. BUSH  “These stories about my intellectual capacity really get under my skin. You know, for a while I even thought my staff believed it. There on my schedule first thing every morning it said, ‘Intelligence Briefing.'”
There's nothing anywhere for Donald Trump...

A Summer Blockbuster

The idea of the summer blockbuster started in June 1975 and the movie was Jaws.  Blockbuster means a feature film that is highly popular and financially successful.  It is aimed at mass markets, and has associated merchandising.  The term began to appear in the early 1940s where aerial bombs were capable of destroying a whole block of buildings. It was applied to movies in May 1943, when advertisements used the word.

It was Jaws that changed things. Jaws was perceived as a new cultural phenomenon:  a fast-paced, exciting entertainment, with 'buzz'.  Star Wars came next with the same sort of appeal, and had a run of more than a year.  This started a race for the summer blockbuster and it has continued.

Voted the number 1 blockbuster year is 1984 - Ghostbusters, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, The Karate Kid, Gremlins, The Neverending Story, Once Upon a Time in America, Purple Rain, Red Dawn, Revenge of the Nerds, Top Secret, Bachelor Party, The Natural were the movies.

The second place summer is 1989 with Batman, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, When Harry Met Sally, Dead Poets' Society, Do the Right Thing, The Abyss, Ghostbusters II, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Lethal Weapon 2, License to Kill, Parenthood, Uncle Buck, and Road House.

The third place summer is 1985 with Back to the Future, The Goonies, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Teen Wolf, Weird Science, National Lampoon's European Vacation, The Black Cauldron, Cocoon, Fletch, Fright Night, and St. Elmo's Fire.

Is there a lot in store for this year's summer blockbuster season?  We're half-way through the summer and the promotions continue to take precedence over the reviews in our google retrievals.  That might be called  the 'blockbuster effect.'

Here are two hosts leaves today.

Baby Types?

Did you know there are 4 main temperaments of babies?
  • Easy
  • Challenging
  • Sensitive
  • Intense
How long does a baby's temperament last?  A lifetime?  Here is the advice in the happiest baby.com article:

"With time, the excitement that used to ignite her shrieks will start a bubbly flow of giggles. So if you have a challenging baby, don’t lose heart. Passionate infants often become the biggest laughers and most talkative members of the family. (Hey Mom, look! Look! It’s incredible!”) And sensitive infants often grow into the most compassionate and perceptive children. (No, Mom, it's not purple. It’s lavender.”)"

Another article described 9 temperament traits: activity, regularity, initial reaction, adaptability, sensitivity, intensity, mood, distractibility and attention span and persistence.   This comes from parentingforbrain.com.

Once we become adults, the research articles on personality types become more complicated. Are there 2,4,5, or 8 types of personalities?  It does seem that we are clearer on babies and less so on mature humans.

An academic research article from sciencedaily.com says that childhood personality traits predict adult behaviour.  The researchers examined four personality attributes -- verbally fluent, adaptable, impulsive and self-minimizing.This article says:
"We remain recognizably the same person," Nave said. "This speaks to the importance of understanding personality because it does follow us wherever we go across time and contexts."

Our picture today shows the texture and details on the surface of a fall hosta leaf.
