April 13 2022 - So Many Luckies

The world of Mathematics is very active. Here is something that we didn't learn about in school because they were new ideas at the time I went to school.  The term is lucky number, and was introduced in 1956.

I found it asking myself this question: What if I would like more than just the lucky number seven.?

From Wikipedia:  In number theory, a lucky number is a natural number in a set which is generated by a certain "sieve". This sieve is similar to the Sieve of Eratosthenes that generates the primes, but it eliminates numbers based on their position in the remaining set, instead of their value (or position in the initial set of natural numbers).

Wikipedia shows us how it works with an animation.  I've captured a screen shot just at the end of the elimination game.  You can go to the Wikipedia entry HERE to see the animation and read the process.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a lucky number set each day and find their occurrences.  1, 3, 7, and 9 today.  Would this be a sort of game of synchronicity?  Synchronicity describes circumstances that appear meaningfully related yet lack a causal connection.

There are more interesting named numbers - fortunate number (a person's name), abundant number, lucky numbers of Euler, Happy number, Harshad number are a few.

And what about today's picture?  I purchased a flat of Muscari, aka Grape Hyacinths on the weekend.  One of the flower stands on Fourth Avenue at Ninth Avenue sells them each year.  There is a field along Ninth on the south west side that is full of them blooming each year.  These are forced bulbs, so are ahead of the field.  Such a divine blue they are.

May 10 2020 - The Failure of the Adult Burger

I wondered how it could be that I missed the Snowbirds.  But no, they scrapped the flyover because of SNOW.  So today's the day - again at 12:45 to 1:45pm.

"The Museum of Failure is a collection of failed products and services from around the world. The majority of all innovation projects fail and the museum showcases these failures to provide visitors a fascinating learning experience. Every item provides unique insight into the risky business of innovation."  - museumoffailure.com

The Museum founder is psychologist Samuel West.  He wants to portray the real-life experience where "It's rough and dirty" with stumbles and falls, where failure is a better teacher than success.  The Museum tours with pop-up displays around the world. It made a trip to Toronto's Harbourfront in 2018.

What is distinctive?  They all look just like products that are on the market right now.  McDonald's - Arch Deluxe 1996-97 attempting to change its image introduced a more adult taste hamburger.

I pick that one, as I don't know what an adult taste hamburger would be.  So let's get McDonald's to answer the question:  "The
Arch Deluxe was a quarter pound of beef on a split-top potato flour sesame seed bun, topped with a circular piece of peppered bacon, leaf lettuce, tomato, American cheese, onions, ketchup, and a "secret" mustard and mayonnaise sauce."  This is a failed product so we aren't able to try it out.

On the other hand, you actually can buy and try Adult Hamburger Helper.  Here's what they say about it:  "Hamburger Helper might have been a childhood favorite, so we've updated for sophisticated adult tastes with sundried tomatoes and a touch of cream (don't worry - kids will still love it!).  Smarts: Finish with cheddar cheese if you want a thicker finish and more comfort or a touch of cream for something lighter and more sophisticated."

And then there are lots of proposed dinner ideas for grownup burgers.

  • Grownup pizza burger
  • Turkey Burgers 270 Malt winegar-Molasses Burger Sauce
  • Chile-Lime Burger
  • Grown‑Up Grilled Cheese - American and Swiss cheeses on two burger patties topped with two cherrywood-smoked bacon strips, onion rings ... etc
  • Grown-up burger:  red wine burgers with mushrooms
This should be the next wave of frenzied cooking during COVID-19 as we embark on hamburger season starting this week when the temperatures return to seasonable double digit numbers.

In the meantime, we have just got a high-quality scanner and here's the result - Muscari (grape hyacinth) from the garden wishing everyone a Happy Mother's Day.
