May 4 2024 - The Celebration Begins

Despite the silly questions on Google about May the 4th celebrations, this is a wonderful unofficial holiday.  We created it.  That's because a literature society who enjoys language can create celebrations independent of authority figures and groups.  We did it with Pie/PI day too.

At the official Star Wars Day site, there are Star Wars Day Recipes such as Jump to Hyperspace with a Cold Corellian Iced Coffee.

This isn't some cynical marketing - it wasn't a promotion originated by Lucasfilm.

Wikipedia says:  "The first recorded reference of the phrase being used was on May 4, 1979, the day after Margaret Thatcher was elected as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Her political party, the Conservatives, placed a congratulatory advertisement in the Evening News saying "May the Fourth Be with You, Maggie. Congratulations."

The first organized celebration of Star Wars Day took place in Toronto in 2011.  That's when the games became entrenched forever.  The Lucasfilm's marketing information now says that the days is related to Geek Pride Day.  That seems odd as the Geek pride Day doesn't refer back to Star Wars.  But Geek Pride Day does reference science fiction.

So here we are 47 years after the release of the first movie in the series. That seems like a long time to me. I expect other people will remember the opening as thought they were there yesterday.

All those little blossoms on the ground instead of making peaches on the tree.

May 6 2022 - It's legal in California - May the Fourth!

There's a time and date website with the "Fun Holidays on May 6" - Surprisingly, after yesterday taking a look at pants, they say that No Pants Day is one of today's holidays.  Is that a don't wear anything over your underwear day?  I can't tell at all.

We just passed the milestone of May the Fourth Be With You Day.  In the news, California became the first governing body to officially recognize May 4 as Star Wars Day.  There were many U.S. festivals that made the news this week.  On the other hand, perhaps it is when Disney bought Lucas Films that the promotional possibilities of this phrase took flight.  It became a big day at Disney parks.  There's $14 million in tax revenue each year to Anaheim.

Reader's Digest claims that it was the Tory party in England that launched the pun on May 4 1070 with a newspaper ad that said: “May the Fourth be with you, Maggie. Congratulations.” Reader's Digest attributes Newsweek with the original story.  Reader's Digest says it crossed into mainstream pop culture in the early 2000s. The first big organized event was the Toronto Underground Cinema in 2011, with screenings of the movies and a celebrity judged costume contest.

Look at the Niagara cherry tree closely with me.  Do you see the cocoon/chrysalis?  The pictures of butterflies on weeping cherry trees shows Swallowtails. Edith Smith seems to be the photographer of Swallowtails, and this could easily be such a chrysalis when I look at her photographs.  Hers are of the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail.  Have you seen butterflies yet?  I've seen cabbage butterflies and something mid-size with brown colourings.  Does anyone know the early spring butterflies?
