Nov 17 2022 - Dog Barking

When I see dogs in other people's cars I bark at them.    I want to say hello. The experts don't encourage this:

"One thing you have to bear in mind is that there is no such thing as an official dog language. When dogs communicate with one another it is through body language and tone. So, when you hear dogs barking at one another the key thing that they are listening to is the type and tone of the bark."

And yet there so many videos on how to bark like a dog and have conversations with your pet.  Are we learning to distinguish the types and the tones of barking?  I haven't investigated this.

I go with this approach:  "if he starts wagging his tail, jumping up excitedly, and is clearly happy, the chances are he likes what you are ‘barking’ to him." And usually dogs getting a bark greeting in cars get excited so seem to like it.

Sometimes Millie sits there with her head to one side - which is dog language for what is this supposed to mean?  - I do the same.  The would likely lead to double confusion.  But it seems fun at the time.

And Baxter? The experts say that cats do not meow at each other.  They meow at humans.  Here's the meow interpretation:

The m- or mrr-sound is a pleasant sound that the cat uses for people it likes.

If the e of the meow is stressed, it can signal physical discomfort, such as that the cat is hungry or cold.

The meow that cats use most with humans has a long ah-sound.

If the person doesn’t respond, the cat becomes frustrated and the ow-sound becomes more pronounced, almost like a howl.

I remember that Baxter learned the last one when he was boarding at the vets one time.  He came back with a loud and prolonged set of meows that he now prefers.

Another grunge abstract with numbers.

Sep 12 - September is Happy Cat Month

Are you ready for this?  You thought that cats are indifferent and superior.  There are 15 signs that your cat is happy.

They are things like:

  • They purr
  • They have a healthy appetite
  • They like to play
  • They're relaxed
  • They like to rub on you
  • They're knead-y
  • They keep themselves (and sometimes their owners) clean

Here are the signs for dogs:

  • A high and waggy tail. This is probably the most well-known sign your dog is a happy pooch.
  • Floppy ears. By this, we mean that their ears are relaxed, not tense or flattened against their head. Pricked upright ears are a sign of alertness – they tell you if your dog is happy or sad, just focused.
  • Their body’s relaxed. If your dog seems relaxed in their posture and not tense or stiff, this is a good indication they are feeling good. Loose shoulders, soft eyes without a fixed gaze, and a dose of ‘wiggliness’ or pure ‘flopped-outness’ are all clues that your dog’s feeling super chill.
  • They’re playful. A happy dog is more likely to want to play and leap around. Play “bows” are a great sign your dog is in the mood.
  • They lean in to you. A relaxed dog who enjoys your company is more likely to also enjoy your attention. They may come to you for attention and it’s a good sign if they lean into your hand when you stroke them.
Do we humans get a list of signs for happiness?  Not so easy, is it.  We get all analytical and generalize this to living a good life and being "genuinely satisfied".  But I did find one equivalent sign:

So, how can you tell if someone is truly happy—or masking another emotion?
While it starts with the mouth, it’s actually all about the eyes! A sign of happiness is when the sides of the lips rise symmetrically (as in the first picture on the left). In an authentic smile the eyelids drop, and the eyebrows lower accompanied by a symmetrical smile (see the picture on the right).  You can see the pictures HERE.  Another article says that it has to do with the crinkles near the eyes.

This wonderful colour combination is the Weeping Willow at Charles Daley Park reflected in the water.  It isn't about to turn yellow yet - usually it happens into November.

Neonized and Electrified

Electric Lines

The Toronto Convention Centre has a series of neon sculptures along its walkways.  I've take a lot of pictures there.  One can do blurred motion images using slow shutter speeds.  The resulting pictures look like flowing fabric.  Other approaches are focusing in on the glowing abstract lines.  I took a few of the glowing abstract line images and put them through one of Topaz' software filters - Topaz Glow.  It adds electric neon lines to images. So neon's been given the neon effect - it looks like fossilized minerals to me.

Wear and Tear

I am fascinated by patterns, shapes and lines in abstract form, so find patterns of wear and tear interesting.  These signs are corrugated plastic or cardboard. Perhaps it is a combination.  The bright colours and geometric shapes caught my attention.  The first sign is for delivery of The Standard, the St. Catharines newspaper.  It has been in operation since 1891. Now owned by Southam, it was originally owned by W. B. Burgoyne and stayed in the family for 105 years. The publication and its debt was bought in 1982 by the paper's mechanical superintendent for $1.  Father and son, Henry, ran the paper.  It passed on through the generations of Burgoynes, all of them keeping the editorial independence thriving. Their dedication to St. Catharines is commemorated with a number of landmarks - a park, arena, and downtown bridge all still carry his name.  The St. Catharines Standards remains a lively publication and the largest in Niagara.  It is interesting how a sign with wear and tear and have such a story packed into it.

Now the tattoo sign, in Toronto, has no history so will be a mystery story.  One can create it from imagination.  Perhaps its location in the King Street West area can be the starting point.
