Apr 4 2025 - Roll Over Rover

I wonder what makes dogs do things so well. Things like catch, roll over, shake a paw, and sit.  Do dogs learn faster than humans?   AI compares a dog to a 2-year-old child in terms of intelligence.  Then skip to Quora. Quora can be counted on for hilarious responses to questions.

How do dogs think so quickly compared to humans?  Short answer:  Dogs appear to think faster than humans because they have less to think about.

Back do dogs learning so fast.  There is a puppy socialization guideline called the rule of sevens.  By the time a puppy is 7 weeks old, it should have:

  • Been in at least 7 different locations (backyard, garage, kitchen, neighbor’s yard, etc.)
  • Eaten from at least 7 different containers
  • Been held and petted by at least 7 different people Taken at least 7 one-mile car rides
  • Been in a crate at least 7 times
  • Played with at least 7 different kinds of toys
  • Walked on at least 7 different substrates (grass, gravel, concrete, etc.)
  • Been taken somewhere alone, without mom or littermates, at least 7 times
  • Been exposed to at least 7 challenges (climbed on a box, gone through a tunnel, climbed up steps, etc.)

And then what?  You will socialize them and they will learn more about the world around them.   I assume they will learn faster, too.

It is proposed that this rule of sevens approach is as crucial as kindergarten is for a human child.

I wonder if we have a rule of 7 for 2-year-old children.  Is there a 7-7-7 rule?  Yes, there is.  It goes like this:  Play with them for the first seven years, teach them for the next seven, and then advise them for the next seven and beyond.

I vote for the dog rule of 7 - more fun in a shorter time.

Tulip time is starting in a few weeks - towards the end of April and then finishes the middle of May.  We have Tulip Festival Fields now in Niagara.  Little did I guess that the display last year would be so pertinent this year.  This is at Seventh and Fourth Avenue in St. Catharines.

Oct 15 2024 - Dog News Today

Yes, there is are google headlines for "dog news today".  It isn't all good news - but we won't dwell on that.  And it is today's news.

I don't know if dog news is a recent regular item. Pet ownership is up almost 20% over pre-pandemic levels.  The increase in the US is from 38% to 45% of households.  Cats are more popular as well.  In Canada 77% of Canadians have a pet - that includes cats and dogs.  In Canada 33% own dogs.  In Britain it is 36%.

So I guess that's a sizeable audience for dog news.  I get the sense that Britain does more fun things with their dogs.  The BBC has a few articles on the dog event in Sandford Parks Lido (that's British for a public, open-air swimming pool or beach). This is swimming pool is open for the last two weekends of the season to dogs. Then the pool is drained for the winter.  Lots of pictures of Australian Shepards, Labs, and Retrievers.  More than 1,000 dogs took part.  I guess that accounts for the multiple articles - very cute pictures.

Millie hasn't shown interest in swimming pools - she goes to the edge.  Spaniels are supposed to love the water and swimming.    I haven't found out if she might like Lake Ontario - as we haven't gone for a walk at Charles Daley Park in the summer. That's prime time for the Watering can where she gets the hundred hugs from all the customers.

And I doubt Millie would be interested in the Lake in winter.  I could find out if she's a swimming dog -   our own Horseshoe area has dog swimming pools.  K9 Fun Zone looks like an excellent choice as it has pictures of dogs in the pool. Lots of dogs and lots of pictures.  They are always cute.

This is my idea of a pool - perfect for abstract aqua photographs.

May 7 2023 - The Day After

What was yesterday's Coronation highlight?

"Over 100 dogs, who share the same name as the UK’s new King, participated in a pup parade after the coronation on Saturday 6 May."

"A timelapse video shared by the Associated Press showed pet owners walk their spaniels down the famous West London road, to commemorate the beginning of Charles’ reign.

The lap dog was reportedly named after King Charles II, who favoured the toy breed in the 17th century."

Twitter has the highlights.  Look at them all!  Lots of great pictures of Cavaliers.

One quote says "They are the most cat-like of the dogs".

So here's a cat's retort to that.  This fence in Queenston says:  Be Aware of the Cat.

April 14 2023 - Chernobyl's Dogs

The most abandoned place on earth is listed as Hashima Island, Japan.  It was once the most densely populated island in the world. It became populated when a coal deposit was found underwater.  When the coal ran out, so did the people.  This is the Conde Nast article on the 45 places HERE.  The pictures are all haunting and eerie.  I guess that's what makes us look at the article.

Chernobyl isn't on all of the abandoned lists. The History channel covers it in their 6 famous ghost towns and cities. The city is Pripyat, Ukraine, and previous to the disaster was a town of 14,000 people.  The city was sealed off, and what remains are wild dogs roaming through the buildings and streets.  And these have become the focus of a genetic study.

Before the Russian invasion, there were over 3,500 people who worked there each day among the more than 500 stray dogs.  A genetic study was recently been undertaken of the dog population there now. These are descended from the abandoned pets and the working dogs in the plant.  There are genetic differences between the dogs in the plant - which are primarily German shepherds and the dogs elsewhere which are a mix of modern breeds.  While the intent of the study is to track the effects of radiation, it has documented the population of 15 different families  and tracked how they interact in social groups.

There is a lot of news coverage of the study, so you can find articles everywhere on it.  The scientific study is at science.org HERE

There have been initiatives to help the dogs, and a facebook page tracks this. It is HERE.  There are pictures of adopted dogs, so it is encouraging.

It is most curious that Chernobyl is a popular tourist destination. It is for those who want to experience desolation, abandonment and decay.  As many as 100,000 people per year visited the area, but none since the Russian invasion. The tour?  It is named the 'toxic tour'.

Whenever I see combinations of colours and textures like this, it makes me think of radiation.  But radiation is colourless.  This picture comes from the National Gallery - looking up at the glass block ceiling/floor of the pool above.

Feb 1 2023 - Dog Food

Dogs have lived with us humans for more than 16,000 years.  From medieval times up until the mid-1800s dogs were mainly fed a steady diet of table scraps. They ate things like cabbage, potatoes, and bread crusts – whatever their owners could spare.

It is said that the Mesopotamian diet for dogs was barley dipped in whey, hunks of bread, meat broth and table scraps.  Sounds good.  Rice was a staple ingredient for dogs in China.

But then the industrial revolution of the mid-19th century came along, and dogs became pets as well as work animals. The year of note is 1860 when James Spratt produced a wheat-based biscuit that also contained beef blood. British sporting dogs were the starting recipients of these new biscuits.

When canned food came along, it was horse meat - readily available and acceptable back then.

Kibble came after biscuits.  It is a product of extrusion.  That's a method of flash-cooking raw ingredients at extremely high temperatures in order to create a uniform, pellet-like product that resembles the kibble of today. Once sprayed with taste-enhancing chemicals and preservatives, the kibble was bagged into enormous quantities and sent to market.

Today there are mainstream movements in raw food and fresh food.

What are some surprising foods you should not feed a dog?

  • avocado
  • onions and garlic
  • grapes and raisins
  • macadamia nuts
  • persimmons, peaches and plums

I found the Douglas Adams Toronto fountain pictures.  Here's one.

Nov 17 2022 - Dog Barking

When I see dogs in other people's cars I bark at them.    I want to say hello. The experts don't encourage this:

"One thing you have to bear in mind is that there is no such thing as an official dog language. When dogs communicate with one another it is through body language and tone. So, when you hear dogs barking at one another the key thing that they are listening to is the type and tone of the bark."

And yet there so many videos on how to bark like a dog and have conversations with your pet.  Are we learning to distinguish the types and the tones of barking?  I haven't investigated this.

I go with this approach:  "if he starts wagging his tail, jumping up excitedly, and is clearly happy, the chances are he likes what you are ‘barking’ to him." And usually dogs getting a bark greeting in cars get excited so seem to like it.

Sometimes Millie sits there with her head to one side - which is dog language for what is this supposed to mean?  - I do the same.  The would likely lead to double confusion.  But it seems fun at the time.

And Baxter? The experts say that cats do not meow at each other.  They meow at humans.  Here's the meow interpretation:

The m- or mrr-sound is a pleasant sound that the cat uses for people it likes.

If the e of the meow is stressed, it can signal physical discomfort, such as that the cat is hungry or cold.

The meow that cats use most with humans has a long ah-sound.

If the person doesn’t respond, the cat becomes frustrated and the ow-sound becomes more pronounced, almost like a howl.

I remember that Baxter learned the last one when he was boarding at the vets one time.  He came back with a loud and prolonged set of meows that he now prefers.

Another grunge abstract with numbers.

Sep 26 2022 - Oktoberfest

This is Oktoberfest time - it goes from Saturday September 17th to Monday October 3rd this year in Munich.  It is usually a 16 day event.  This is a festival that started in 1810 in Munich, with Bavarian traditions of Munich-only beer.  Only 19% of visitors come from outside Germany.  One of its claims to fame is a scientific connection - Albert Einstein once worked as an electrician and helped to set up one of the beer tents in 1896.

The pictures show a midway for children with ferris wheels, roller coasters and similar rides.  And just in case, there is a lost and found children office at the festival.

With over 6 million people participating each year, t
he Oktoberfest Lost and Found office every year has thousands of abandoned goods - about 4,000 every year.  Statistics for 2013:  1056 passports, 520 wallets, 320 mobile phones, 300 bags and rucksacks, and 50 cameras.

There have been  peculiar finds, such as two wedding-rings, a hearing-aid, a set of false teeth, a tombstone shaped like a pencil and a Segway.  Also of note?  A tuba, badminton racket set, car license plate, wheelchair and crutches.    "
Objects lost by the millions of foreign visitors to the world's biggest folk festival are transferred to their respective embassies and consulates.

Where's the second most-popular Oktoberfest in the world?  In Kitchener-Waterloo and it is on right now too.  We have perfect timing as the festival concludes with the Thanksgiving Day Parade - floats, entertainers and marching bands.  This festival has over 700,000 visitor.   Just the parade alone has 150,000 spectators.

Here's Millie in the kitchen.  It seems to me that all of our kitchen floor, wood flooring, rugs and furniture match with Millie.  Very convenient for photos.

Aug 8 2022 - A Four Dog Party

It was a four dog party - a pyrenees, two border collies (I think) and tiny Millie the Cavalier. There  could have been more dogs - the number of dogs during Covid has increased immensely.  But who can be sure that dogs will get along?  The owners are all model railroaders, so have something in common.  But what would make the dogs want to play with each other and accept each other?

I don't know.  And I find out that there are a few techniques such as introducing them on neutral territory, each leashed and walked by a different person, don't let them walk too close at first,  and so on.

So taking Millie to a home that is dominated by 3 other dogs and then giving those dogs lots of attention might not be the best scenario for dogs making friends.  Why is that?  Because dog get jealous.

"They are just as likely to turn into a green eyed monster as humans, according to scientists in California. Researchers studied 36 dogs from 14 breeds and found that most were indifferent when their owners ignored them until the owners showered their attention on a stuffed dog. Then their behaviour changed dramatically, sparking snapping and snarling."

And consider this - that if we give too much attention to those other three dogs, and our dog could easily have gotten jealous.  Did Millie misbehave?  No, she was very good, but if she had been bad - like eating their dinners, then what could we expect?

"Researchers found those puppy dog eyes are not a sign of guilt but fear. In fact it is just the way we interpret a dog’s reaction to being scolded. If they eat every biscuit in the house, they may look ashamed but don’t expect them to feel guilty as they don’t experience these emotions.  Maybe Denver didn't eat the kitty-cat treats after all."

It is Millie's birthday this week, and there are more articles on how to throw a dog party than how to bring a dog to a human party - dog-friendly ice cream, birthday cake dog ideas, un-fur-gettable memories,

June 27 2022 - She did it herself

What about those DIY tricks on amateur YouTube videos.  There seem to be a lot of them.  Some of them are silly, others are misinformation, and a few are remarkable.  There's one that made the news in the"Good News This Week" site.

Nikki Coles has stayed busy over the last two years. At the beginning of the pandemic, the 37-year-old mom of two from Essex, England, decided if she was going to be inside, she might as well do a few projects around the house. At the same time she was studying for law school, Coles began watching DIY videos on YouTube, and soon, she was upgrading each room in her house.

With her new skills, Coles recently revamped her kitchen — she retiled the floor, changed out the countertops, and applied fresh paint to the cupboards and walls, doing everything herself. She went to thrift shops and found items for free on Facebook, so it only cost her £200 ($245) to get a stylish new kitchen. "It kind of started with a little bit of tweaking here and there, and then I really got the bug," she told The Independent.

Coles is working on her final project — redecorating a bathroom — and said it "just goes to show what you can do even as a busy mom on a budget — and if I can inspire other mums in any way, shape, or form, then I'm happy."

One of the articles references the British equivalent to our Dollar Store - it is called  "Poundland".

Today's picture is Millie.  This seems to be her typical pose for the camera - the worried little Cavalier look.

June 23 2022 - Brubeck vs Dog Licking Legs

There's a famous American Jazz name.  His 100th anniversary concert would have been 2020, but for us it was last night with his two sons The Brubeck Brothers.  We were treated to a mixed media presentation with videos of the family and Dave Brubeck and his Quartet.  It was a wonderful tribute to a great musician, cultural diplomat and human.

I hadn't remembered that he was a Pacific cowboy and that many of the rhythms he brought to his music were learned   from the rhythms of horses' hoofs as they run.

"He recalled the rhythms he heard while working as a boy on cattle drives at the northern California ranch managed by his father. The first time he heard polyrhythms - the use of two rhythms at the same time - was on horseback.

"The gait was usually a fast walk, maybe a trot," he said. "And I would sing against that constant gait of the horse. ... There was nothing to do but think, and I'd improvise melodies and rhythms."

This was in one of the videos in which he demonstrated the horse rhythms on his chest.

Millie, our dog, seems to blocking everyone.  Is it salt on their skin?  She doesn't like my legs.  Supposedly is releases endorphins and leaves them with a comforted feeling. Supposedly they do it as a sign of love.

Another site has this to say:  Dogs may lick your legs to get your attention, communicate their feelings, gather information about you or where you’ve been, or simply because they taste something they like.

So we have a few curiosities today - the origins of Dave Brubeck's polyrhythms and dogs licking legs.  Here's Millie looking up at light on the wall, another curiosity of dogs.

Mar 4 2022 - My Dog Hates Cats

With spring each year come a few feral cats checking out Baxter.  One has come back from last year, an appears to be a friend of Baxter's.  They sit together on the office window ledge in the morning darkness. I haven't seen that one now for more than a week.

However today, sitting on the office desk, Millie, our dog went berserk.  She could see a cat outside and she is furious over it.  This is the opposite to her relationship with Baxter, who was sitting next to her.

There is a natural tendency for the relationship between dogs and cats to be antagonistic.  But then you can find countless pictures of cats and dogs curled up in each other's arms having a nap together.

Here are some common cat sayings:

“Get a look at this cat.” In this example, ‘cat’ refers to a man, typically expressed with disbelief or surprise.

“She’s such a cat.” Referring to a woman who is gossiping or tends to gossip.

“She’s a cat on a hot tin roof” A Southern saying that refers to someone who seems nervous. It was popularized following the Pulitzer-Prize winning Tennessee Williams play titled, “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.”

What’s the matter? Cat got your tongue?” A question often directed humorously toward people who are struck speechless, who are not answering a direct question, or who are not participating in a conversation.

“The police and perpetrator were playing a cat and mouse game.” Describing a tactical back-and-forth engagement or situation where two parties try to seek and evade each other.

“I’m going to take a cat nap.” Taking a nap can be any level of restful or length of time. A ‘cat nap’ is one that is brief, but restful.

And dog sayings:

“My Dogs are barking.” A saying that refers to tired and aching feet.

“That experience will dog him forever.” A bad, but memorable event that someone will not be able to get away from, either because they remember it too often, or because the people around that person won’t let him forget it.

“She was dogging them for insulting her earlier.” To criticize someone or something or to give them a hard time. To be negative toward someone.

“I feel sick as a dog.” This saying is one of the oldest known sayings involving the word, ‘dog.’ It dates back to the 17th century and is used when we want to describe someone who is really sick.

You will find more of these expressions HERE.  And if you want to see the Bored Panda Dog vs Cat cartoons, these are HERE.  This is the top voted cartoon.

Do you remember this picture?  It is the Douglas Coupland dog fountain in Toronto. I think its name is supposed to be Fountain of Youth.
