Jan 14 2024 - Art Trends 2024

What do you think of what news there is in the art world today? There are 45 art magazines and publications listed for us to follow in 2024.  What do you think about the Hi_Fructose name? What about Art and Cake or Hyperallergic?

My knowledge is extremely low in this area so I wonder what is in the scope of an art magazine.  I think maybe visual arts.  But art has a broad scope -  not just painting but  music, literature, and dance.   Everything expressive.

I focused on traditional art - like visual art - painting, sculpture, etc. and what I find is that predicting 2024 trends in art is big business - just like Pantone and Benjamin-Moore predicting 2024 colours.

One site says colourful art - vibrancy beyond boundaries will take "centre stage in 2024" with "palettes that evoke emotions and spark joy."  Doesn't that sound like the patter of the Benjamin-Moore and Pantone sites.   It suggests that it is all about selling.  Expanding your art collection.   With the internet anyone can investigate the latests trends, ideas, and fashions.  So there are trends from the point of view of the museum and art gallery curators and from the point of view of art patrons and investors.  There are days worth of reading in this area.

Something caught my attention:  What is considered vintage and antique? "New collectors are increasingly drawn to vintage and antique pieces that boast compelling backstories and originality—and for many, the works of the 20th century perfectly satisfy this interest."

This picture from our trip to Cuba caught my attention - as our street light was causing reflections on the street from the rain.  The temperature is dropping, though, and the clouds are racing by and soon to bring more rain and then snow. So maybe the next picture from January 2014 is what is in store - that was the polar vortex year and this was ice in the greenhouse.

Sep 8 2022 - School Days - What to wear

Here are nine trends for children in back to school fashion for 2022:

  • Wide-leg pants
  • Barbiecore
  • Matching athleisure
  • Platform shoes
  • Belt bags
  • Oversized sweaters
  • Tie dye
  • Bucket hats
  • Head to toe denim

My favourite trend is the platform shoes - the platforms are on the top of running shoes.   Think Nike and think expensive.  And what about "athleisure" - isn't that a great expression - hybrid clothing is what it is considered - for athletic activities and in other settings.  Think leggings as that seems to be the dominant item.  The barbiecore trend is how to wear pink.  It is considered a much-welcomed mood-booster for 2022.  Embrace those vibrant hues.  "Barbiecore is for everyone - not just back to school. "

School uniforms? Here in Ontario they exist in the Roman Catholic school system and in private schools.  There are advertisements for trendy school uniforms as well.  I'm not sure how that would work.

Do you remember what you wore on one of your first days of school?  This likely applies to women more than men.

This is Laura Secord Public School in Queenston.   A public school named after a national hero who never went to school.

June 2 2020 - 'Totally Fresh' Wedding Trends

Into the month of weddings. Just what are the trends for 2020?  Here are the two that stand out for me in this article on theknot.com

"Magical Mysticism...
If there’s one theme you need to know about 2020 wedding trends, this is it: mysticism is in. This spiritually charged vibe combines all the things: crystals, saging, palo santo, even aura photobooths. Don’t force this though, make it work for your unique couple style—send guests home with a rose quartz crystal, the classic stone for love, or ask your guests to pass around your wedding rings during your ceremony, imbuing them with good energy and well wishes."

"The New Amenity Basket ...
Think of this as the ultimate wedding trends #extra. Instead of treating guests to just mints and hairspray (psst, here's what else to include in a wedding bathroom basket), make their trip to the loo more memorable. Stationing tarot card readers, magicians and champagne stations just outside restrooms ensuring the party doesn’t stop, even if you leave the dance floor. "

This article is immediately followed by How to Postpone Your Wedding Due to Coronavirus. What do you think?  Cancel the crystals and aura photo booths?

Today's image is scanned Japanese Maple leaves, given an artistic touch with Topaz Impressions.

I put butter in my coffee...2019 diet trends

Google trending searches for 2018 included topics like actors, athletes, people categories. We are mostly obsessed with people.  Here's a search I wouldn't have imagined - magnetic eyelashes.  The magnets lock together between the natural lashes and secure the false lash along the natural lash line.  So ingenious!

Google has a diet theme.  Here are the top searches on diets:

keto - eliminate all the carbs and put butter in your coffee not cream
dubrow - interval eating to confuse the "satiety centre"
noom - an app focused on behavioural change
carnivore - foods that walked, swam or flew and pretty well nothing else - aka anti-vegan diet
mediterranean - plant-based emphasis, olive oil, herbs, limited red meat

That was in 2018.  What are healthline's predictions for the diet trends that will dominate 2019?

gut health - balancing the microbiome
plant proteins - new this year - dandelion greens, rainbow carrots, beets and amaranth
intermittent fasting - easy to follow
keto diet - spotlight in 2018 will continue in 2019
hemp - anti-inflammatory effects
bitter food - asparagus, cucumbers, detox the GI tract
un-dieting - futility of dieting trend

And they conclude with an eighth one - intuitive eating - the practice of increasing one's awareness and experience of eating.

So many news organizations have been covering diets.  U.S. News ranked diets on January 2nd, right in time for the resolutions - they ranked 41 diets overall.  That's a lot of diets to choose from. They are HERE.  The top three are: Mediterranean, DASH, Flexitarian and MIND (tied with Flexitarian).

The Chef's Summit

Is there something new in food? It is hard to find out.  It doesn't seem to be a premier 'topic' on google - one retrieves food near me and other take-out sorts of topics.

With a little digging, though, I find out there is a Canadian Pizza Summit each year with a competition for pizza chef of the year.

In 2018  two winners shared the title of Chef of the Year. Chef of the Year (Traditional) is Giuseppe Cortinovis of Ignite Pizzeria in Vancouver. Chef of the Year (Open) is Dean Litster of Armando's Pizza in Windsor, Ont.

Cortinovis' pizza is called The Queen, a twist on the Margherita, while Litster's winning entry was a creative pizza he dubbed The Dean Martin.

The award chef of the year (around the world) is covered on finedininglovers.com.  The Le Chef compilation of the 100 best chefs in the world for 2019 has been released with chef Arnaud Donckele from the La Vague d'Or restaurant in Saint-Tropez named the best chef in the world.

You can see pictures of his 18 dishes HERE. And you can see the menu at the end with prices - 295 Euro is over $400 Canadian.
The Red Rose dessert is 44 Euro.

The world restaurant awards announced their shortlist of nominees on January 17th.  You can read about it HERE. There is the list of Big Plates:  These are the short-listed restaurants in categories like Original Thinking, Off-Map Destination, No Reservations Required, House Special, Event of the Year, Ethical Thinking and so on.

Then there are the small plates - the short list categories (tongue in cheek) are:  tweezer-free kitchen of the year, trolley of the year, tattoo-free chef of the year, and so on.  Wouldn't that be wonderful to see a chef without tattoos!

For the rest of us, the top 2019 trends don't have this razzle-dazzle.  They seem straight forward:
  • Sri Lankan cuisine
  • Burmese cuisine
  • Meat-free
  • Kefir
  • Ugly fruit and veg
  • Hidden vegetables
  • Food halls
  • Eating where you shop... and so on.
Our pictures today come from Powell Garden in Kansas City.

Foolproof Future

Would you like your plans to be future proof?  Get the Foresight Tool - a web-based strategic foresight tool.  Its trend radar visualizes which trends and megatrends will shape your future.
"Once your radar is in place you will operate on a new level of future awareness. You will implement actions inspired by future foresight and you can continue to monitor the key trends that will impact you. Revisit your future radar on a regular basis and evaluate latest developments. It’s easy to update your project’s foresight radar view as key trends develop further or new drivers of change emerge".
Patrick Dixon's site is GlobalChange.com. In his banner are the site stats - 15.5 million unique visitors, 6 million video views.  The summary trends start with "Truth About ..." and "Future of"

What about the title of his book: "The Future of Almost Everything: Six Faces of the future Cube" - there are dozens of predictions to check out HERE.   However for me the experience became overwhelming and everything seemed so generalized.  I ended up skimming through the text.

So I asked something more specific - the future of food. Now we start to see the magic of the future.

3-D printed food made its debut at London-based Foodini Ink.
Foodini is a 3D printer for foodstuffs. Its Florida-based makers are hoping their time-saving device becomes as ubiquitous on kitchen countertops as the microwave oven has become. Read the CNN story HERE.  The company is working with major food manufacturers to create pre-packaged plastic capsules that can just be loaded into the machine to make food, and they assure these will be free of preservatives, with a shelf life limited to five days.

This goes together with IoT - "the Internet Of Things".  More on that tomorrow.

The spring flowering bulbs finished yesterday in the garden - tulips and daffodils are completed for another year.
